  • Trion Worlds Launches Von Bach Industries Website, Defiance Beta Signups Open

    Trion Worlds has launched a brand new, viral website for Von Bach Industries, the leading manufacturer of advanced weaponry and technology in the world of Defiance. On the website, it has been announced that Von Bach Industries is currently accepting Ark Hunter Recruits, so if you're looking to work with VBI's partners at Trion Worlds, and beta test the upcoming shooter Defiance, this is your opportunity.

    Arriving at the office this morning, from Von Bach Industries themselves, was a small metallic briefcase containing our first debriefing as an Ark Hunter Recruit. In this briefcase, we received a pen that separates at the middle to expose the USB drive within. Upon inserting the drive into our PC, we uncovered a handful of videos that shed some more light on who Von Bach is and just exactly what is expect of us as Ark Hunters. As it turns out, the company and website are part of the world of Defiance. Von Bach Industries produces advanced weapons and technologies and is at the forefront of Votan-hybrid weaponry, enabling Ark Hunters to salvaged more and more useful technology from the Arkfall.

    In our world, this means that Trion Worlds is ready to accept applications for the Defiance beta. If you're not familiar with the game, Defiance is an upcoming first-person shooter/television show hybrid. The game takes the form of an MMOFPS, currently in development at Trion Worlds - the studio behind the popular MMO Rift. As for the other side of things, SyFy Channel will be broadcasting an original series of the same name that follows the same events of the game. Both mediums will parallel each other with events from the show impacting the core storyline in the game.

    It is an ambitious project and one that we are really excited to see more of. Today's video drop and website are the sort of thing we love, and give us some insight into the type of world that we can expect to be a part of in Defiance.

  • DICE Previews Battlefield 3: End Game Expansion Pack

    DICE has released the first look at the upcoming Battlefield 3: End Game expansion, showing off the dirt bikes that players will be able to pilot when the content ships next year.

    As announced by DICE, Battlefield 3: End Game is set to include:

    • Four new maps designed for high speed combat and action
    • Three new vehicles including the fast and agile dirt bikes
    • New dropship provides support to ground troops with vehicle drop capabilities
    • Return of the classic Capture The Flag game mode

    Available at the bottom of this page, the trailer gives us a look at the upcoming content, although it focuses heavily on the dirt bikes. We're expecting a full trailer before the end of the year, but for now, this is a great preview. The dirt bikes look quick and very maneuverable as you can see in the trailer and should be a lot of fun to drive. Capture the Flag is a classic game mode that no good shooter should go without, so we're looking forward to seeing the game mode make its Battlefield 3 debut next year.

  • The Dead Linger On Sale For $19.99, Build 005 Released

    Sandswept Studios has released alpha build 005 for The Dead Linger this week, bringing the game ever closer to beta and, ultimately, final release. The changelog for this update, which is being dubbed Feliz Navidead incidentally, is pretty hefty like most of the previous alpha builds for the game. This time around, the update includes a handful of new weapons including the powerful .308 Vegas rifle and, probably the one we're most excited about, a Katana melee weapon.

    Some of the other highlights include:

    • There is a new type of ammunition in the game. (.308)
    • There is a new, rare, and more powerful .308 scoped rifle – the Vegas Rifle.
    • There are a few new melee weapons, including a Katana.
    • There are some new furniture pieces to be found in the world.
    • Certain items have had their spawn rates tweaked. Firearms in particular should spawn quite a bit less often now.
    • Multiple improvements have been made to the console window.
    • Players now have visible backpacks. This is one step closer to swappable backpacks, which are planned in a very near update. We will have more information on the Kickstarter backpack reward later on.
    • Firearms now spawn in the world with at least 1 box of ammunition.
    • Zombies no longer slide around as much in the distance.
    • Other crash and bug fixes.

  • 10 Things We'd Change About Black Ops 2 Multiplayer, Part 1

    If you could change one thing about Black Ops 2, what would it be? It's a question we've been asked more than a few times, and something that the team at FPS General has discussed together in the past.

    I have been playing Call of Duty titles for years now, and other FPS titles for longer than that. I have also been playing Black Ops 2 since before it was released. I have had plenty some time to sink my teeth into the game. I’m always thinking about the things that irk me, things that would make more sense if they worked in other ways or were replaced by something else, or simply removed from the game. I've put thought into this topic for quite some time and it’s time to get it off my chest.

    Before I start the list, a quick note; none of these are ranked in any order, and some of them are much more important to change than others.

    1. Spawn Protection

    In previous Call of Duty titles there were different versions of spawn protection, allowing you to survive the first few second against explosives. This helped counter the powerful air support in the game. This, by no means however, guaranteed you a free rocket towards that air support. In Modern Warfare 3, they introduced a slightly extended version of this when the round started as well to prevent a grenade landing on you at the start of a game.

    I’m not entirely sure the thought process behind this one. Why remove this feature? The only thing I can think of that makes sense to me is that they’re more powerful so that they feel more useful, making you think it’s worthwhile to try for the higher Scorestreaks. If it were up to me, I would add it back in, as well as the timer on how long before you can throw a grenade at the start of the match...it feels a bit long in Black Ops 2.

  • Gearbox Releasing 'Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt' on January 15th

    Gearbox Software has officially been hacked. Or at least their Twitter account @Echocasts has been hacked.

    Again. 

    This time, it's none other than Sir Hammerlock himself who has taken over control of the account. But don't worry, he's not out to wreak some social revolution in 140 characters or less, he's just here to announce some brand new Borderlands 2 DLC. 'Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt' is officially set to release on January 15th, bringing some brand new content to Borderlands 2 in the form of new weapons and new player customization, including heads and skins for all characters. The team also released a brand new trailer for the content update, which you can see after the break below.

  • Crytek Debuts Episode 2 of 7 Wonders of Crysis 3, Plus Train Yard Gameplay

    Crytek has released a couple brand new videos for their upcoming first-person shooter, Crysis 3. The first of these videos is actually the second episode of the 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 series, which they produced alongside filmmaker Albert Hughes. The first episode focused on Prophet's return to New York City, which is now encased in a massive Nanodome courtesy of CELL.

    In today's episode, entitled 'The Hunt', Crytek is focusing on the grassland area that will enable Prophet to prowl through the grass taking enemies out. In the video below, Prophet makes use of the lethal Predator Bow as he stalks through the tall grassy areas. "No matter the target, Crysis 3's Predator Bow has a tactical solution to any problem you may face in the Seven Wonders of the Nanodome," says Crytek. This is evidenced pretty clearly in the latest episode and we're looking forward to getting our hands on the Predator Bow when the game ships early next year.

    The second video is actually a sneak preview of part of Crysis 3's singleplayer campaign. In the video, we see Prophet and Psycho trying to escape a trainyard in New York City. The duo make use of explosive arrows in this preview, but the choice is up to the player. Using Prophet's Nanosuit modules, players can choose to go stealthy and sneak past the CEPH Stalkers rather than taking them head on.

    Explosive arrows are kind of more straight to the point, however.

  • 2Dawn Games Rolling Out Free DLC to Ravaged

    2Dawn Games this morning has released some brand new content in Ravaged. The update brings new vehicles and weapons to the multiplayer-only shooter, as well as some new features and tweaks, as well.

    “This new DLC Pack is a gift from us to our community,” says 2Dawn Founder Boris Ustaev, in a press release. “We strongly believe this new assortment of maps, vehicles, and weapons will increase the chaotic team-based fun so many people have already enjoyed — with a whole new level of depth and replayability. And the best part? It’s free.”

    The Apocalypse DLC Pack, as they're calling it, features:

    • Devastating New Vehicles: The Tractor Tank, Quads and Trikes with two seats, and the new Mini Chopper with mini guns on both sides for both the Resistance and the Scavengers
    • An Arsenal of New Weapons: The new weapon unlock system offers players the brutal Nail Gun, AK-47 (with scope), AK-47 (with silencer),.357 (gold colored), Mp7, M16 Scope, M16 Silencer, MK16 with Ironsight, and AN94
    • Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VOIP): Players can now voice chat with their squad instead of using a third-party option
    • One New Map: Introducing The Dust Bowl, a large map for vehicle gameplay
    • More Visible Squads in UI
      • Auto-Kick: For players that don't spawn for three minutes
      • New Skins: Three new skins for the mini-helicopters

  • Update: The War Z Removed From Steam

    Update: The War Z has since been removed from Steam due to complaints from the community that not all of the features being listed are available. We will keep you updated as we learn more! The original story is available below.

    Big news today from the Hammerpoint Interactive camp as The War Z foundation release has officially been made available on Steam! This is a step above beta testing and below final release, with a wealth of new features and tweaks.

    Hammerpoint Interactive's zombie MMO already sees more than 150,000 daily players, but the Steam release is sure to increase that number exponentially. The foundation release is available now and has been described by Hammerpoint as including:

    • Entirety of world map, all areas unlocked
    • Tweaked spawn points for loot and players
    • Clan support
    • Gold Coin shop
    • More zombies

    On releasing The War Z through Steam, Sergey Titov - Executive Producer at Hammerpoint - said:

    “The Steam platform gives us the ability to reach a huge audience of PC gamers and working with their team has been great. Now that we’ve reached the Foundation Release milestone we will continue to work, as promised, to add features and content that will satisfy our community and keep them playing.”

  • Black Ops 2, Frag Cup IV Tournament Recap

    The roots of competitive Call of Duty started on the PC platform, but the console community has been growing at a rapid rate over the past five years. On top of constant growth, the community now has additional support from the developers with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 including a brand new “CodCasting” platform with a vast array of features that help enhance the viewership experience. These factors have led to arguably the most supported competitive Call of Duty title for the console platform yet.

    The first major tournament for Call of Duty Black Ops 2 wrapped up on Sunday. In an event that featured 1,814 Call of Duty teams, only the final eight teams went into the Machinima Frag Cup 4 championship bracket. Throughout the tournament, teams fought their way through a single elimination bracket, using a ruleset that can be found here: http://360icons.com/xbox360/blackops2/tournaments/fragcup4-finals/rules/

    The final 8 teams were compLexity, TKO Takeover, Fariko Impact, OpTic Gaming, CsC (JuKeD), GenesiS, Nova and ClockWork. The remaining eight teams fought through a gauntlet of skilled teams to get where they were at that point and no team wanted to be eliminated. The championship bracket facilitated some of the most intense and entertaining matches the Call of Duty community has ever seen. Between upsets, heartaches, clutches and score streaks galore, the tournament created an intense environment for not only the competitors but the 14,000+ plus viewers that were tuning during the peak of the stream.

    In the grand finals, compLexity, who was the fan favorite from the start, was up against a cinderella story team known as CsC Esports who provided for a very entertaining match up. compLexity ended up defeating CsC in game 6 of the final set to take the Machinima Frag Cup 4 championship and $6,000 to pad their wallets.

  • Irrational Games Teases First Five Minutes of BioShock Infinite

    If you - like the rest of us - are beyond eager to get your hands on some more BioShock Infinite footage, you're in luck. 2K Games has released a brand new BioShock Infinite video, showing off the first five minutes of gameplay.

    This kind of goes without saying, but the video at the bottom of this page contains spoilers. If you don't want to know how BioShock Infinite opens up, then you should not watch the video released this morning that shows how BioShock Infinite opens up. 

    If you do want to watch it, you can find it at the bottom of this page. If you haven't really followed BioShock Infinite, or the BioShock franchise, this is a great excuse to get yourself brushed up on BioShock lore. In an effort to keep FPS General spoiler-free, we'll leave researching the first two BioShock games up to you. In BioShock Infinite, however, players take on the role of Booker DeWitt, a former agent of Pinkerton - a security group that was founded in the early 20th century. Booker has been sent to the floating city Columbia, to rescue a young woman named Elizabeth, which he does with relative ease.

    After that, however, things start to take a turn for the worse. Booker and Elizabeth are pursued by both of the factions that are warring for power on Columbia; the Founders and Vox Populi.
