CRD Pound

CRD PoundThe CRD Pound offers temporary shelter for lost domesticated animals, and operates an adoption program. We also have a Volunteer Program in which certified trainers work with some of our animals to increase their potential for adoption.

The ultimate goal of the Capital Regional District Pound is to return all domestic animals to their owners, adopt animals to good homes, place animals in foster homes and transfer animals to approved rescue groups. Animals by law must be kept for 72 hours, however this period could be extended if we feel that the owner will eventually pick up his/her animal. Animals should ideally not be kept at the pound for any more than 15 days. This period may be extended for reasons of evaluation, training, or for animals that are awaiting court dispositions. If an animal has not been returned to its owner or adopted after the waiting period then discussions will be started with approved rescue groups (i.e. Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders) to have  this animal released to this group, providing they agree to look after all needs and obligations of this animal.

In 2007 the CRD brought in 708 dogs and 438 cats, 99% of the dogs and 95% of the cats were either returned to the owner, adopted or placed in foster homes. This is an unprecedented success and can be attributed to hard working staff and volunteers at the CRD Pound, and cooperation with a variety of Animal Advocates groups such as Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders, Victoria Adoptables, Citizen Canine, Cats Cradle and local foster homes.

In North America the leading cause of death of cats and dogs is euthanasia of unwanted pets. We spay/neuter pets that are to be adopted. In some cases this cannot be done prior to adoption (i.e. due to age). In these cases we offer a surcharge refund with proof of spay/neuter.
