The U.S. Congress plays a critical role in shaping, funding, and overseeing U.S. global development policies, including foreign assistance, health, trade, migration, and climate change. The Center’s policy outreach team works to ensure that our research and analysis is readily accessible to Capitol Hill audiences. CGD experts regularly provide testimony on development issues before House and Senate committees, submit written statements for the Congressional Record, and participate in roundtable discussions with members of Congress and staff. As part of the Center’s communications team, policy outreach staff work to provide timely, relevant answers to the development policy questions being asked on Capitol Hill. They monitor ongoing debates and regularly brief CGD’s experts on policy issues and opportunities. The policy outreach team also serves as the Center’s primary point of contact with development-focused non-governmental organizations, sharing information and policy perspectives. CGD’s interaction with policymakers on Capitol Hill, including testimony from president Nancy Birdsall, was instrumental in unlocking $1 trillion additional resources to help developing countries cope with the impact of the global financial crisis.
