The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. better hope the Lighthouse is stocked up on sunblock.
ABC‘s Marvel drama, which over the weekend was renewed for a shortened, 13-episode Season 6 to air at midseason, in fact will not return until Summer 2019, ABC president Channing Dungey announced on Tuesday during an Upfronts Week press call.
Dungey told TVLine that the summertime scheduling was strictly ABC’s decision, and not necessarily out of deference to any of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans. (Avengers 4 — the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War, the end of which would seem to have significant implications for the characters on TV’s S.H.I.E.L.D. — hits theaters next May.) “Whatever they [at Marvel Studios] have planned, I cannot say,” she hedged.
As for speculation that Season 6, being S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first-ever shortened run, will serve as the show’s swan song, Dungey told me, “I feel like Season 5 was their creatively strongest yet, so I don’t at the moment have any plans to think of Season 6 as the last season.”
In fact, the summertime schedule could extend the show’s life span.
“What we’ve discovered is that we have a very loyal and passionate fan base for S.H.I.E.L.D. The show does incredibly well for us in delayed viewing,” Dungey explained. “By putting it in the summer, we’re going to be able to ‘super-serve’ the fan base that loves that show and hopefully give it an opportunity to continue on longer than we would if it was [scheduled] in-season.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs its Season 5 finale this Friday at 9/8c.
Wtf!!! Tho it could be worse I guess. Hopefully the ratings will be better
Are they perhaps waiting till the ratings for the finale to come in to announce it’s the final season? Or are they genuinely hoping it will perform better as a summer series?
You didn’t even read the article? They specifically said that’s not what this means.
So they renew it only to burn it off during the summer. And we have to wait a whole year before it comes back.
I actually like this, since it’ll be after Infinity Wars part 2 and they won’t have to force themselves to go along with the spoilers from part 1. I would’ve really hated it if they had to incorporate that ending into all/most of Season 6.
Agreed!
Yeah, this is hardly a burn off. It’s basically ABC a) avoiding Avengers continuity and b) seeing if the show’s fanbase will migrate to summer time where ratings expectations are lower.
I’d rather wait a year for a half season than the show getting cancelled – wouldn’t you?
Yes I agree
Summer 2019 means that they dont have to deal with the Avengers fallout that much… they can address it in the finale this season and when the new season starts Avengers 4 would have already come out and likely reset things again… placing the season between Avengers films would have created all sorts of hassles for them.. so this makes sense.
They’ve already introduced time travel into the Marvel universe so I’m hoping some of our heroes will travel back in time in #4 and stop Thanos altogether.
The tie-in to Avengers 4. I’d bet that’s why we can get it back before then. I’m just glad it’s coming back.
Good way to make sure everyone’s back from the slightly enourmous last Avengers issue. Plus presumably when they come back we’ll get to see some reunions.
I’m really glad they’re doing it like this. I didn’t want to see half the cast moping around miserably for a year.
I’d bet any amount of money the move is due to an Infinity War tie-in and the need to hold the season until after Avengers 4 hits theaters.
It makes since sense Infinity War causes a whole buncha mess. Air it after the sequel and they’re good to go! It’s a long wait but I can survive!
It would be worth it if SHIELD was made legitimate again in Avengers 4, that way, they won’t have to spend season six underground or on the run. (Also, somebody please get Adrianne Palicki’s people on the phone. Bobbi must return for even one episode.)
I agree. This season has been my least favorite one because they’ve been so detached from the rest of the world.
Because like May and Coulson they retired, I doubt we will see any more of Bobbi.
Clark Gregg is also in Captain Marvel – for a supporting role, not a cameo. Next May’s Avengers 4 will be resetting the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way, so I think it’s fair to suggest it will impact Shield. I don’t mind the summer schedule, because I have very little to watch during the summer.
I agree with others about how this will probably be for the best, because of everything that happened with Infinity War. And honestly, I’m so grateful to ABC for keeping the show this long. I know it doesn’t do well in the ratings and is expensive — every year I feel like they would be justified in cancelling it, and every year they bring it back. I still remember the sting of Veronica Mars and Firefly, among many others, so I have nothing but GRATITUDE for ABC.
I don’t care when they back. I only care they will back. If they give us 6 maybe season 7 i will watch them in summer.
If Avengers 4 is truly about time travel/resetting the universe it would be nice to see SHIELD become legitimate and the agents having a small cameo in the movie (maybe a post credit scene).
I agree. It would be cool to see Daisy, Coulson, and May represent in Avengers.
Folks… The 4th Avengers movie comes out next May. So it means AOS is keeping up with the events on Infinity War.
Honestly, this is great. They don’t have to deal with the whole two-part Infinity War thing. They can pick up after, just like the next Spiderman film. My only worry now is whether or not Coulson lives. If he dies, we riot.
If Coulson dies, i will just not watch season 6. No reason to watch if my favorite character is dead.
Ward was my favorite character and he died but I still watch to support the show plus I don’t think you can have a AoS without Coulson so I’m sure he will return.
Sucks it will be a long wait but the show could do well in the summer ratings wise and hopefully will get renewed for another season if Season 6 won’t be the last for the show.
Makes sense – obviously that means they can ignore IW completely, as it will be after whatever fix will happen in IW2 (.or whatever it’ll end up being called)
The show’s ratings were already bad. Do they think having their already small audience wait over a year is a good idea?
Bizarre decision.
Not a good idea at all, they’re going to lose the little audience they have.
Their not gonna lose me in the fan base I’m still binge watching all of Marvels tv series I just keep watching them over and over but a new season once and awhile would be nice.
I’m going to go ahead and call BS on the not in deference to Marvel of it all. They’re totally looking for a way to dodge Infinity Wars and Avengers 4
😞
Coulson will be one of Thanos’ casualties. That way there will still be emotional impact without anyone having to make the tough call. Then in the summer, after IW is resolved, Coulson will be back miraculously healed.
It is good that got something else right. It is one of less than a handful of shows I watch on regular TV, I am reqiured to use the DVR for most evening programs. Someday this feature may be tracked for ratings.
I love this. Probably no need to deal with the snap (assuming the sequel turns out the way people expect), I see no reason that the audience wouldn’t follow it to summer, and the ratings expectations will be lower so if it holds its audience share season 6 might not even be the final one. That’s kind of amazing (although to be honest, 6-7 seasons is about the longest you can do before actors start wanting to leave, so for me the best case scenario is probably 7 seasons, ending with a legitimised SHIELD reforming with Coulson as director).
i reckon the AOS s5 cliffhanger will be the thing that happens in infinty war
While it sucks we have to wait till next summer, I’m actually cool with this. I think a short season will work for this show and help prevent any filler episodes and if this leads to a couple more seasons of this awesome show I will happily wait till summer to watch it. Besides Summer TV has been kind of a wasteland last few seasons it will give me an excuse to turn on the tube.
