Posts & channel performance: Content tab tips

If you want to grow your YouTube channel, it’s important to know what content your audience is interacting with the most. The Content tab in YouTube Studio Analytics lets you easily find data about your content – Videos, Shorts, Live streams, and Posts – all in one place. You can compare these different content types to find out what’s working best for your audience.

You can sort content performance by using the following tabs: All, Videos, Shorts, Live, and Posts. If you’re not seeing a tab, it's because you don’t have that content on your channel.

All

Under the All tab, you can view the following reports:

Views

Compare your views across Videos, Shorts, and Live stream to find out which format is performing better. Keep in mind that the amount of content you have in each format can affect performance. You may want to explore creating videos in a new format to find out how it affects views.

Impressions and how they led to watch time

This report shows the number of viewers who come across your video and, of those viewers, how many watch and for how long. Note: that this info is viewable on your computer, not on mobile devices.

Viewers across formats

This report shows the breakdown and overlap of viewers consuming your content by format (videos, Shorts, and live). As you adopt a multiformat strategy, these insights can help you to understand whether your current audience is watching the new formats you’re using.

How viewers find you

This report tells you which traffic sources bring viewers to your content. Think about which sources are working for you and which could need your attention. For instance,

  • ‘YouTube Search’ could indicate how effective your video title and description are.
  • ‘External’ could indicate how effective your social media presence is. It could also indicate how many people are linking to your video from their sites.

Posts

When you sort by ‘Posts’, you can see:

Post impressions

This report gives you a sense of how many viewers your posts are reaching across different time periods. Think about how different this number is from your total subscribers. Note that the type of post (image, poll, etc.) can affect this data.

Top posts

This report shows you your most engaging posts by likes or votes. Do your image posts get more views or the poll posts? Does a certain topic get more attention regardless of the post type? You can use this data to find out what’s working best for your audience.

We recommend

  • After each video upload, take some time to understand performance metrics for your video and your channel. This info can help you build a deeper understanding of how your content is performing at each level.
  • Remember you can change the time period you want to view analytics for. Check out different time periods to identify any trends.
