The Somersault Throw (巴投げ Tomoe Nage?) is one of Ryu's throws dating back to Street Fighter II. It is also used by Akuma (prior to Street Fighter IV), Dan, Evil Ryu and Sean. It is also one of Kage's throws in Street Fighter V.

Description[]
- "Grab your opponent, place your foot on their torso, and throw them behind you as you fall backwards. Throw your opponent while switching places with them."
- —Street Fighter 6
Executed by pressing Light Punch and Light Kick, (the throw command) and pushing backwards near an opponent. Ryu grabs his opponent by the collar with both hands, and falls backwards as in a backwards roll. Once they are off-balanced forward, Ryu plants a foot low on his opponent's waist and applies strong pressure, rolling onto his own back with his opponent above him. This causes the opponent to flip over Ryu and crash back-first on the ground. In Street Fighter V, Kage's back throw not only shares the same name as Ryu's, but it also has a very similar animation.
Tactics[]
This throw is a great way to get his opponent back in the corner. It also does more damage, compared to his forward throw. Additionally, Ryu's back throw puts his opponent at a distance. This resets the neutral game and allows Ryu to zone out his opponent with his projectiles. Compared to other characters, his throwing game is very limited. However, it is important for Ryu to use his throws. Because his mix-up game is somewhat limited, he has to find ways to open up his opponents whenever he can. Ryu can "condition" his opponents into baiting tech throws, before fishing for Counter Hits.
For Kage, this attack shares similar properties to Ryu's back throw. While his Somersault Throw inflicts the same amount of stun as his forward throw, it deals slightly more damage. Even though Kage's back throw resets the neutral game and creates separation from his opponent, he can keep them at a distance by using his fullscreen fireballs.
Somersault Throw returns as Ryu's back throw in Street Fighter 6. Unlike previous renditions of the game, his throw inflicts similar damage to his forward throw. It switches sides with the opponent, making useful for putting the opponent in the corner if they have Ryu backed against the wall. He can also immediately perform a Drive Rush to reapply pressure as his opponent is recovering. Despite inflicting minimal damage, Ryu can utilize throws to break the opponent's defenses; especially during okizeme. By mixing up strong normals with his throws, Ryu can keep his opponent guessing and score free damage while putting back in the corner.
