—Ed (Street Fighter 6)

Ed (エド Edo?) is a video game character from the Street Fighter series, first appearing in Street Fighter IV as a non-playable character before making his playable debut in the second season of Street Fighter V.[10] He is the Psycho Power wielding protégé of Balrog, captured by Shadaloo to serve as a potential substitute body for M. Bison. And later he becomes the leader of Neo Shadaloo, comprised of all test subjects like him.

Ed was revealed to be the third fighter in the Year 1 Character Pass on April 20, 2023. He was released on February 27, 2024.

Biography[]

Appearance[]

Ed has short blonde hair and blue eyes. When activating his Psycho Powers from his hands, his eyes glow purple.

In Balrog's Super Street Fighter IV ending, he was seen in a patient uniform and his head was covered in bandages. In Street Fighter V, Ed is a teenager with short blond hair. He wears a white sleeveless hoodie jacket, black trousers, and red sneakers. He also has a bar code tattoo on his left arm and wears a matching set of white wristbands. He mostly wears his hood up. This outfit is his first alternate costume in Street Fighter V.

As a playable fighter, he wears a blue Neo Shadaloo uniform, which lacks sleeves, and wears white-striped black MMA sparring gloves. His physical appearance has also changed since his stunt in A Shadow Falls, becoming older, taller and a lot more muscular.

His second alternate costume consists of black boxing shorts with red trim, dark red compression tights, and navy blue boxing boots. He also wears a red military jacket resembling Bison's to cover both of his shoulders and a corresponding hat on his head. Like Balrog, he wears red boxing gloves.

When Ed was a child, he wore a white long sleeve shirt and matching pajamas.

In Street Fighter 6, Ed maintains his sideswept bangs covering his right eye and short cropped hair along the sides and back. He wears a more casual outfit consisting of a blue hooded jacket with a red inner lining and matching red hood. The jacket is open to reveal his bare chest, and he wears light blue jeans low on his hips to show the black waistline of his boxers, paired with red and dark blue vintage boxing shoes with white laces, and red boxing wraps. Additionally, his physical appearance is notably leaner, and he has paler skin, hair, and visible bags under his eyes, hinting that his reliance on Psycho Power is wearing away at his psyche.

His story costume is a blend between both of his alternate costumes in Street Fighter V, he regains his white sleeveless hoodie jacket with his hood up and has v edges to reveal his red sleeveless muscle shirt, he also wears a black long baggy shorts along with leg warmers and sneakers.

Ed's second alternative costume in Street Fighter 6 is his Neo Shadaloo uniform from his SFV debut but now wears a black Trench Coat with a gold plate texture on his left shoulder and gold diamond shaped spikes around the wrist of the sleeves. He also wears white leather dress gloves instead of his white-striped black sparring gloves. His now seems to wear a Commander blouse, white tie, white belt, and a Overseas cap that is different then his default SFV uniform.

Personality[]

In his initial appearance during the events of Street Fighter IV, Ed was a meek, scared child taken in by Balrog. His superior's demeanor shaped his growth, leading to Ed taking on Balrog's aggressive tone and cocky nature. Despite his physique and power, he still has some childlike tendencies, having been forced to grow due to Shadaloo experimentation. He often looks to others for advice, namely Balrog and later Falke, seeing them as family members.

Despite his attitude, Ed can (as noted by his win quotes) be appreciative towards certain opponents, such as Balrog, Falke, E. Honda and Ken, as well as giving some advice to other opponents like Cammy and Chun-Li. Likewise, other characters such as Alex, Ryu, Ken, Rashid, Dhalsim and Zeku also gives Ed some good advice in their win quotes against him. Like Cody, Ed also fights very powerful opponents such as Akuma and he admits that it was a challenge for him but became scared at first because of his formidable power.

His playable appearance in Street Fighter V, chronologically following the fall of Shadaloo, shows a more troubled side of his personality. As a potential Bison body inherently attuned to Psycho Power, Ed looks to use the time he has to help other former Shadaloo experiments, forming Neo Shadaloo and using Psycho Power as a means to an end to do so.

In Street Fighter 6, Ed continues his endeavors against the remnants of Shadaloo, though there are hints in his behavior that his usage of Psycho Power have led to further corruption, as shown in his Low Health KO win pose, where he laughs maniacally, as well as his more short-tempered, explosive mannerisms in both his battle quotes and his World Tour appearance. His soft spot is shown in some win quotes, where he compliments other members of his group such as Baba Mwalimu and still acknowledges the fighting prowess of those he faces, like Marisa, Dee Jay & Ryu.

Concept[]

According to Takayuki Nakayama, Ed's name actually comes from the word "ED", a term used in anime production to refer to ending scenes and music.[11] Nakayama referred to him as "The ED Boy" in a note, which was misinterpreted by the designer as being his name. Nakayama liked the name, and kept it.

Ed's unique control scheme in Street Fighter V was designed as practice for Street Fighter 6's Modern Controls setting. As the setting has been added to Street Fighter 6, Ed now has regular, command inputs for his attacks.

Ed's Psycho Flicker and "kicks" in his Street Fighter 6 appearance are named and modeled after the Flicker Jab, a type of punch invented by professional boxer Thomas Hearns and popularized in the boxing manga Hajime no Ippo, most famously by a supporting rival Ryo Mashiba.

Ed appears to bear inspiration from SNK fighter Rock Howard, the lead character in Fatal Fury: Wolves sub-series. Along with sharing origins stemming from their series' main antagonists, Rock was depicted in his ending to a morally ambiguous path of helping his uncle Kain R. Heinlein start a new questionable enterprise in the city of Second Southtown within Fatal Fury canon. His neutral taunt in Street Fighter 6 dwelves further the similarity, making Psycho Power flow out of his arm akin to Rock's iconic ki wings. Additionally, Ed may also be inspired from Bandai Namco fighter Steve Fox, due to being boxers whose past lives were once being experimented to be potential vessels of antagonistic powers like Psycho Power and Devil Gene, respectively.

Ed may also represent the further nearing of a New Generation much like Rock and Alex, as he takes on his fighting style after Balrog and M. Bison, and is quite young.

Character Relationships[]

Allies / Friendly[]

Balrog[]

At the end of Street Fighter IV, Balrog rescues him from the nearly destroyed S.I.N. Laboratory and in due time -despite initially being saved for selfish reasons- the two form a good friendship with each other and remain with each other through the events of Street Fighter V, Balrog acting as a mentor or fatherly figure to him. The two are seen leaving together after the fall of Shadaloo.

However, during the events of Ed’s story which takes place after the main story, Ed attempts to leave Balrog, in an attempt to protect him, having received a prophecy from Menat that bad things would come in the future for him and Balrog. Balrog attempts to stop Ed and the two argue, it escalated into a physical fight and Ed defeated Balrog. Balrog, sounding tearful shouted at Ed to “get lost” and Ed departs.

In Street Fighter 6, Ed further elaborates on his relationship with Balrog to the Avatar. While he admits that Balrog was "a piece of work" and is aware that someone like him is not the most "ideal" parental figure, Ed nonetheless believes that Balrog treated him like a normal human being out of compassion deep inside his heart, rather than as a "test subject" like the other ex-Shadaloo associates. Furthermore, it is later revealed that Balrog visits Ed occasionally in their headquarters and that there's no animosity between them.

Falke[]

Ed rescued her from a Shadaloo base. They work together and he looks up to her as an older sister. This is especially shown when Falke disappears in Nayshall and Ed is worried about her.

Neo Shadaloo members[]

Ed treats the members of his group like family, and as shown in some of his Street Fighter 6 win quotes, compares the cast with his group members.

Neutral[]

Avatar[]

Ed first meet the Avatar at Metro City subway, where Ed is revealed to be on the run from one of the Shadaloo remnants wearing Cardboard Boxes for masks. Through bonding with the Avatar, Ed constantly dissuades the Avatar to learn either from him or from Shadaloo, being clear that he won't resent them, should they leave Ed and abandon its goal altogether.

Enemies[]

M. Bison[]

Ed was intended to be used as a replacement body for M. Bison. Bison's soul had even threatened Ed during his nightmare.

JP[]

Ed can see through JP's lies, and has been working to take him down and prevent him from turning the former into his puppet leader for the revival of Shadaloo.

Story[]

Street Fighter IV series[]

Background[]

First seen in Rose's Street Fighter IV ending, Ed was kidnapped[12] at some early point by Shadaloo in order to become one of many spare bodies that will serve as a possible vessel for M. Bison. Ed was later stolen by Seth and placed within S.I.N.'s laboratory. He has the mark of Shadaloo on his hand and is able to use a small amount of Psycho Power.[1]

Rescued by Balrog []

Ed was eventually found by Balrog while the latter was searching for treasure around the S.I.N. laboratory, as a young, bandaged and barefoot boy. Although he decides to ignore Ed at first, upon begging Balrog to help him, Balrog notices a symbol glowing on Ed's hand. Balrog rescues him from the crumbling S.I.N. laboratory, believing that it was his (Balrog) lucky day. As they leave, Balrog asks Ed about his abilities, but Ed says that he has none. Nevertheless, Balrog decides to drag Ed along, knowing that Ed can be useful in the future. During this, the symbol begins glowing on Ed's hand again.

Character Story[]

Prologue - 'The Nimble Boxer' After being rescued by Balrog, Ed was taken into the Shadaloo Base by the boxer. Despite being taken into refuge, Ed would constantly suffer nightmares that would go on as he prematurely ages into a teenager. He and Balrog would then travel to India but Ed was still unsettled by the nightmares he's facing. Suddenly a fortune teller appeared behind Ed, she foreshadows that he would have difficult times ahead. Balrog would then meet Guile and Zangief and ask Ed's help in combating them.

Later on, after the fall of Shadaloo and the death of Bison in A Shadow Falls, Ed and Balrog take refuge near a waterfall at New Zealand. However, Ed experiences another one of his nightmares and is about to be possessed by the spirit of M. Bison himself. Ed fights off the spirit and prevents it from possessing him before leaving the tent they're sleeping in to travel elsewhere. Balrog wakes up and asks him what was troubling him. Ed somberly replied that he feared if they stay together, Balrog would eventually get hurt, to which Balrog stated that Ed is too weak to hurt him and that chumps like Ed should shut up and follow orders.

Angered and annoyed, Ed retorts that he's no chump and that the boxer's nothing without him before telling him to go away, while at the same time remembering fonder times together when Balrog was training him and praising him. This erupts into a fight between the two of them, with Balrog insisting that he can't hurt, but Ed prevails. Balrog, in a very uncharacteristic moment, expresses sadness by sobbing while he tries to hide behind his usual wall of toughness and anger, revealing that he didn't want Ed to leave and genuinely cared, and likewise, so did Ed, who leaves behind his only friend and paternal figure.

Months pass and Ed would grow into a muscular young adult. He then states that his destiny is controlled only by himself, and sets out with several new companions by his side, now the commander of a new organization bearing logos similar to Shadaloo.[4]

A Shadow Falls[]

In A Shadow Falls, Ed helped Balrog take Zangief's control key but it was later taken by Ibuki during the first infiltration of the Shadaloo base before he could use his power to take the piece. After Bison's defeat by Ryu and the destruction of Shadaloo, Ed was seen walking away with Balrog.

Other character story appearances[]
  • In Urien's character story, Balrog tells Ed to use his power but Urien disperses it, with ease he appears to be intrigued that Ed has inherited M. Bison's Psycho Powers.
  • In Charlie Nash's character story, Nash would come across him and interrogate him about Shadaloo. Ed would then use his Psycho Power to remove Nash's hand off him and hurt him. F.A.N.G would then catch up to him and attempt to put him back to the Shadaloo base but fails as Ed escapes.
  • In Balrog's character story, Ed would help the boxer fight off F.A.N.G before travelling to China to do a deal with Urien where they would also encounter the ancient Necalli, who attempts to devour their souls, but would melt away after Balrog easily defeats him. They would then go back to the Shadaloo base where Balrog reveals his plan to betray Urien.
  • In Falke's character story, Ed manages to rescue Falke during the events of A Shadow Falls. After forming Neo Shadaloo, Ed spars with his aide Falke which he ends up getting defeated, complaining that she shouldn't be rescued by him if she was strong. Ed finally decides to rescue the others and needs to get stronger which Falke decides to go with him.
  • In Seth's character story, Ed and Falke were confronted by the now revived Seth, who mistakes him for Bison, due to his Psycho powers.

Street Fighter 6[]

A Psycho Power-wielding youth aged up rapidly by Shadaloo's experimentation, on a journey and a mission to free other subjects. He gets his short temper and foul mouth from Balrog, his former mentor.

Arcade Mode[]

A.K.I: Time to Work[]

After infiltrating JP's base in Nayshall, A.K.I. confronts the tyrant about his interest in Shadaloo genetic experiments such as Ed.

Ed: Neo Shadaloo[]

Ed's story begins with him explaining the formation of Neo Shadaloo after the events of Street Fighter V: A Shadow Falls, leading to him scattering the group to search for other Shadaloo hidden bases and other possible victims, his search sending him to Metro City. Eventually ending in Nayshall, JP greets Ed, making him lose his cool as their talk goes, saying how some Shadaloo followers named his group Neo Shadaloo, and they seek Ed as the successor to Bison's throne, leading to a clash between the two. Although Ed defeats JP, he obtains no more answers from the man. Back in Metro City, a confident Ed claims that he will enter this game of groups collision, shouting that they will play the cards & the rules of it.

World Tour[]

Bind & Blast. The Hidden Fugitive. The Path of Freedom. (バインド&ブラスト。 隠れた逃亡者。 自由への道。 Baindo& bura suto. Kakureta tōbō-sha. Jiyū e no michi.?, German: Binden und sprengen. Der verborgene Flüchtling. Der Weg der Freiheit.)

"I'll get stronger the only way I know how.... and that goes the same for you! (私は自分が知っている唯一の方法で強くなります...それはあなたにも同じです! Watashi wa jibun ga shitte iru yuiitsu no hōhō de tsuyoku narimasu... Sore wa anata ni mo onajidesu!?)"
—Ed's advice after completing training & achieving Mastery

Years after the formation of Neo Shadaloo, Ed's whereabouts are unclear. According to intel retrieved by A.K.I., Amnesia leader JP has plans for Ed. Many of the few remaining Shadaloo agents encountered across the world believe Ed would make a good leader for a revived organization, with others believing JP would be a better fit.

In the Metro City Train Station, the Avatar encounters Ed, who is busy fighting Cardboard Box wearing Shadaloo remnants. After defeating all of them, Ed takes a break to read his phone, which has some news that aggravates him. Nonetheless, the Avatar grows close to Ed, who reveals more about his past. To his dismay, the Shadaloo remnants drags one of the members of the once Metro City criminal gang, Mad Gear into their causes. While revealing that he and Balrog are still on good terms, with the latter often hanging out with Neo Shadaloo in his free time, Ed is now currently worried of Falke's disappearance, whose last known location was at Nayshall, during her investigation at the said country.

Gameplay[]

Fighting style[]

Ed utilizes a boxing style infused with Psycho Power, referred to as "Psycho Boxing".[4] His Street Fighter V appearance utilizes kickboxing, while in Street Fighter 6, he uses punches and pure boxing techniques only. His Psycho Power abilities let him fire projectiles and unleash tendrils to strike opponents at a distance. He primarily fights out of Philly Shell, a defensive boxing stance which gives effective protection to all parts of the body which are legal target areas in boxing.

Moveset[]

Ed is unique among the playable Street Fighter cast due to the way his special attacks are performed. Rather than using traditional inputs, Ed's moves are done by either pressing multiple buttons together, or by holding or pressing buttons repeatedly. While there are other characters who perform moves via these inputs (Zangief's Double Lariat, in comparison), Ed's entire moveset aside from his Critical Art consists exclusively of them, thus making it both easy or hard for certain players, depending on skill level. These weird inputs let him combo faster but less efficiently. Additionally, similar to Balrog (prior to Street Fighter V) and unlike most characters, he does not have any Unique Attacks in SFV.

His V-Skill is the Psycho Snatcher where he pulls his opponent towards himself. His V-Trigger, the Psycho Cannon forms a ball of Psycho energy that slowly advances towards his opponent and similarly to Urien's Aegis Reflector, this move also serves as his combo extender. His Critical Art is the Psycho Barrage and is the only move performed via quarter-circle motions. He unleashes a flurry of punches fused with a powerful Psycho energy towards the opponent if it connects and heavily knocks the opponent with a single uppercut. This move is nearly identical to Dudley's Rolling Thunder but with additional changes.

In Street Fighter 6, Ed has been redesigned to be a pure boxer, with his kick buttons now being slower, long-ranged “flicker jab” punches. Psycho Flicker is now the name of a new move entirely, a lashing punch with long range, which can be charged to become Psycho Snatcher, pulling in opponents. Psycho Blitz functions like the original Psycho Flicker, being a barrage of punches. Kill Rush is a dash that moves either forwards or backwards with follow-ups akin to Duck. His unique input system has been relegated to Modern Controls, and has now been given more orthodox inputs for his special moves.

In Street Fighter 6, Ed’s level one Super Art is Psycho Storm, a move in which he bashes his opponent with a barrage of Psycho Flickers. His level two is his old V-Trigger, Psycho Cannon, and his strongest move, the level three, is Psycho Chamber, an upgraded version of Psycho Barrage in which he also ties his opponent with a web of Psycho Snatchers, and then punches around his opponent’s body.

Techniques[]

Despite being a boxer, Ed utilizes an "out-boxing" style with a surprising variety of mid-range options between his "kicks", Psycho Shoot, and Psycho Flicker. Ed can pick up juggle combos without spending meter while also maintaining pressure, making him remarkably efficient at using his Drive Gauge. However, having to choose between slow, long-range attacks and fast, short-range attacks can make it difficult for him to contest with opponents that have a combination of both, making it important for him to maintain space. He also does not have a particularly powerful mixup game between a lack of overhead options and low attacks with middling range, which encourages him to instead constantly harass his opponents at the mid-range before calling out their hesitation with his higher damage options, befitting the Hitman style. Ed also has an all-rounder moveset, with an anti-air and a command dash, as well as three solid Super Arts. His Level 2 Super Art, the Psycho Cannon, is great for combos, as it does not disappear when it hits the opponent, and his Level 1 Super can be used as a combo finisher.

Trivia[]

  • Ed shares the same birthday as Mike Haggar. Interestingly enough, the date is a day before Balrog's birthday.
  • Ed is also the fifth playable character who was originally meant to be a "replacement body" for M. Bison, the first four being Cammy, Abel, Seth and Decapre.
  • Ed's theme is the first character theme in the entire series to be a full lyrical song, the second is Abigail's theme. Prior to them, some other themes included lyrics, primarily Dudley, Elena, and Cody. However, Ed's theme uses a consistent thread of lyrics over the entire course of the song as a rap rather than the occasional repetition of a single lyrical soundbyte peppered throughout the music, as Dudley's theme occasionally uses "get on the dance floor" or "boogie fever", Elena's theme uses "beats in my head" and Cody's theme in Super Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V uses "1, 2, 3, 4, turn the beat back".
    • Ed's theme in Street Fighter 6, König oder Feigling (meaning "King or Coward"), marks the first character theme to features lyrics that are not in English, rather being in German. The lyrics being in German might possibly hint at his country of origin.
  • Ed, Zeku, and Kolin are former NPCs in the previous Street Fighter games who become playable characters in Street Fighter V.
  • Ed in his younger years shared his English voice with Chun-Li, Candy, Hoimei, and Ken‘s secretary.
  • According to Takayuki Nakayama, Ed's physique in Street Fighter V was larger than the design team had originally intended, with his Street Fighter 6 redesign being closer to their initial vision.[13]
  • According to Ed’s theme, he sells mixtapes. However, this may not be true, as the theme might be non-canon.
  • His phone (or phone case) bears a striking resemblance to Cammy's in Street Fighter 6, with both featuring chamfered corners and the rear camera positioned in the same place.
  • There are traits in Ed that hints of his Psycho Power posing a danger of overtaking him and may likely hint of Bison's unexpected (or eventual) return.
    • When Ed uses Psycho Cannon in Street Fighter 6, there is a moment where Ed's eyes appear without irises like M. Bison's, possibly hinting that the move makes him lose control of his psyche. This is easier to see when slowed down.
    • If Ed is defeated from chipping damage, he laughs maniacally, reminiscent of Bison, which is uncharacteristic of him.
    • Bison is confirmed to return for Year 2 of Street Fighter 6, showing that Ed's abovementioned characteristics is a subtle foreshadowing.
  • In the VS screen in Street Fighter 6, Ed's up-input face is a direct reference to Balrog's portrait in Super Street Fighter 2.
