Demographics in Myanmar - statistics & facts
A brief history of Myanmar
Once a British colony, Myanmar gained independence in 1948. After being granted its independence, the country suffered great internal conflict and strife which descended into civil war. Despite Myanmar’s reputation for political and social instability, the country is set to progress economically, which can be deduced by predictions of an increased gross domestic product.
Delving into demographics
Myanmar has a relatively young population, the average age was forecasted to be just 29 years old by 2020. Simultaneously, the number of adults is increasing. Additionally, it has also been forecasted by 2020 that only a small share of the population will be older than 65 years old. This corresponds with the average life expectancy being just 66 years old. Furthermore, Myanmar exhibited a steady fertility rate, ranking in the middle of its southeast Asian neighbors as of 2019. A possible reason for Myanmar’s consistent fertility rate could relate back to the young average age of its population. Despite Myanmar’s fertility rate, the majority of Myanmar’s total population were adults in 2020, with a decreasing share of children. This could potentially be beneficial to the country’s future and have a positive effect on its economy, as over half the population is considered as being of working age. Thusly, this sector of the general public could make a positive contribution towards Myanmar’s society in the years to come.
