The 5G market in Finland is dominated by three key players, Elisa, Telia, and DNA. The coverage of 5G in the country is challenged by a vast contrast between urban and rural areas. The fifth generation of mobile broadband, or 5G, is the most advanced mobile broadband technology developed in response to the increasing demands for faster and broader bandwidth. It is currently being deployed in several markets around the world, including in the
Finland had the slowest 5G speed in the Nordics
Finland ranks last among the Nordic countries in terms of average 5G upload and download speed. While Norway had the fastest
average 5G upload speed in 2023 at almost 39 Mbps, Finland reached close to 27 Mbps. Furthermore, Finland had the slowest
average 5G download speed at almost 225 Mbps in the same year.
In general, the
5G coverage in Finland has been increasing since 2020. While the coverage of urban households increased from 12.4 percent in 2020, to over 98 percent in 2023, rural households reached a 5G coverage of around 92 percent the same year. The coverage was the highest in the capital region Uusimaa, including Finland's capital city Helsinki, at 51 percent as of 2023.
Regional 5G coverage got less the further north the region is located. Lapland ranked last, with a coverage of two percent the same year.
5G providers in Finland
All three leading telecommunications operators in Finland, Elisa, Telia, and DNA, offer their customers 5G connections. Elisa dominated
Finland’s mobile subscription market over the past decade. Telia Finland’s share stayed at around 31 percent during the observed period, while DNA, the third-largest telecommunication operator, increased its share by five percent. All three companies started their 5G rollout for customers in 2019 and 2020. At that time, 5G was only available in certain, mostly urban, areas. A countrywide stable 5G coverage is still a topic the companies are working on.
Nokia is one of the leaders in the 5G patent market
Next to telecommunication operators,
Nokia, a Finnish communications and information technology company, is investing in this technology. The company, previously known for mobile phones and smartphones, shifted its focus to data networking services and the telecommunications equipment business. Nokia is one of the leading companies by number of 5G patents held, with over 6,000 patent families declared as essential to 5G. As of 2023, Nokia's Mobile Networks is the most
revenue-generating business segment of Nokia. Nokia and Telia Finland launched the world's first commercial 5G standalone (SA) network the same year, allowing Telia Finland to offer a better and more stable 5G connection for users.
