China was the world's largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2023. That year, China accounted for 18 percent of all LNG imports. Liquefying gas allows for the trading of natural gas over greater distances, although pipelines are considered the safer means of transportation. Most countries reliant on LNG imports are those with no pipeline connections to producing sites. Australia, Qatar, and the United States are the world's largest LNG exporters, the three of them accounting for 60 percent of global LNG exports.
