Motorbike production volume in Japan 2023, by cylinder capacity

In 2023, the number of motorcycles with an engine displacement of 250 cubic centimeters and over that were produced in Japan amounted to roughly 483.15 thousand units. This category, which is the largest among motorcycle types, had the highest production figures. Most of the large motorcycles produced in Japan are slated for export. 

Consumer preferences

The majority of motorcycles in use in Japan belong to the smallest motorcycle category of machines with an engine displacement of up to 50 cubic centimeters. On the other hand, motorbikes with an engine displacement of 250 cubic centimeters and above are the least used category. Many consumers seem to purchase two-wheelers for practical reasons. The most common usage for motorcycles is shopping errands.

Leading manufacturers

Only a fraction of the motorcycles manufactured by Japanese companies is produced in Japan. Most motorbikes are produced in factories overseas and sold throughout the world. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers such as Honda and Yamaha are dominant forces in the global motorcycle market. Suzuki and Kawasaki complete the “Big Four” of the Japanese motorcycle industry.
