Number of dermatologists in NHS HCHS England in 2024, by staff grade

In 2024, there were 681 dermatology consultants working in NHS England, and another 274 dermatologist with the staff grade specialty registrar. Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in the treatment of skin conditions in particular, but also any problems with nails and hair. 

Skin cancer on the rise

In the last twenty years, the rate of skin cancer diagnoses has significantly increased in England. In 2021, 470.4 men and 258.9 women per 100,000 population were newly diagnosed with skin cancer. This represents almost three times the incidence of skin cancer in both genders compared to the year 2000. 

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures

Besides skin exams, dermatologists also perform many cosmetic procedures such as scar removal or dermal fillers. Worldwide, the most common non-invasive procedures were Botox, followed by hyaluronic acid. In the UK, a survey found that 26 percent of adults have had a non-invasive treatment such as a chemical peel.
