Leading publishers ranked by revenue in Germany 2022

Springer Nature, a publisher of academic and scientific titles, was the most successful German publishing house in terms of revenue, generating 517.8 million euros in 2022. Haufe and the Klett Gruppe followed. Springer Nature is among the leading book publishers worldwide in terms of revenue.

The publishing industry as such covers both books and print media, as well as e-books and e-media. Thus, the market is extremely voluminous and constantly facing various challenges connected to ongoing digitalization and changing media consumption habits, as well as approaches to reading and information. Through the years, paperbacks have been purchased almost three times as much as hardbacks. In 2023, the most successful fiction author in Germany was Sebastian Fitzek, followed by Jojo Moyes and Jussi Adler-Osten.

As far as printed books are concerned, book market revenue is predicted to fall in the 2020s, while e-book revenue is expected to rise. Similar predictions were made about magazines and newspapers. It remains to be seen whether the German publishing industry will be judged by its cover. Thus far, the publishing industry's revenue is predicted to drop by about a billion.
