Share of generative AI use at work or outside work worldwide in 2023, by industry

Most people in nearly all industries around the world have tried a generative AI tool at least once in 2023. Those working in retail and consumer goods industry were the largest group of those who had no exposure to generative AI tools. In general, those in technology, media, and telecom were far likelier to have used generative AI tools at work or outside of work regularly. This is perhaps unsurprising as these fields are the most likely to involve the use of generative AI in business practices.

Generative AI employment change

The effects of generative AI on employee numbers globally will be a serious consideration in the coming years. In 2023 most companies expected generative AI to decrease the number of employees in their business with the sole exception of product development and risk analysis., which was expected to change little. This is likely due to the fact that both require creativity and case-by-case analysis, something AI is still relatively bad in handling.

Europe leads what?

Globally users in North America use generative AI the most used generative AI regularly for work and outside of work. However, it was Europe that led in those using generative AI specifically in the workplace, being the only region with double-digit response. Unsurprisingly, users in developing markets were the least likely to have been exposed to generative AI at all.
