According to this survey, the prevalence of burnout among American physicians increased by roughly 25 percent from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, two-thirds of surveyed doctors had at least one manifestation of burnout, such as emotional exhaustion or depersonalization.
In 2020, the improvement in burnout could be explained by the fact that parts of the country had not yet experienced their first COVID-19 surge. In addition, the pandemic has first transiently decreased work intensity for some specialties. Finally, it brought several potentially positive changes to the care delivery system (virtual care, reduced documentation requirements, breaking down of interdisciplinary silos, and better team-based care).
