The German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia accounted the largest electricity generating capacity in the country as of November 2023, with a capacity of approximately 44 gigawatts. The two largest federal states in Germany, Bavaria and Lower Saxony, followed with 36.1 and 28.1 gigawatts of power generating capacity, respectively. By comparison, the two smallest federal states in the country, Bremen and Hamburg, had a capacity of 1.7 and 0.6 gigawatts that year.

Does not include electricity capacity generated in neighboring countries and feeding into the German power grid, which amounts to 4,410 megawatts.
Does not include non-renewable facilities with a capacity smaller than 10 megawatts, which account for a total of 6,929 megawatts of installed capacity across the country.
