Public forest area in Brazil 2022, by state

The state of Amazonas had by far the most public forest area in Brazil in 2022. The state's public forest area accounted for more than 40 percent of Brazil's public forest area that year. The state of Pará followed with nearly 79 million hectares, which represents some 24 percent of Brazil's public forest area. Both states are in the Amazon biome. By comparison, Sergipe was the state with the least public forest area in 2022, with around 47,200 hectares.

The "Cadastro Nacional de Florestas Públicas" (CNFP) was created in 2006 as a forest management and planning instrument, to gather georeferenced data on federal, state and municipal public forests. These forests are later categorized into different types according to the use, such as conservation, indigenous land, public rural settlements, military areas, and others.
