Bank failures in the U.S. 2001-2023

The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) on the 10th of March, 2023 marked the first bank failure in the United States since 2021. SVB was the 16th largest bank in the United States as of March 2023, and the total assets lost in its failure amounted to approximately 209 billion U.S. dollars. This was the second highest amount of assets lost in the observed period, as only the global financial crisis in 2008 resulted in a higher loss. Two days later, the New York-based Signature Bank followed SVB. The value of assets lost in its failure amounted to roughly 110.4 billion U.S. dollars, making it the third largest bank failure in U.S. banking history. All together, there were 564 bank failures in the United States between 2001 and 2023.
