As of January 1, 2023, approximately 39.6 thousand participants in the Great Patriotic War lived in Russia. Over the past year, the number of living war participants decreased by almost 5.8 thousand. In Russia and other post-Soviet States, the Great Patriotic War refers to the war between the USSR and Nazi Germany and its allies from June 22, 1941 to May 9, 1945 during the Second World War (1939-1945).
The war participants are considered those who were in the army and took part in military actions during the war. The term is not to be confused with war veterans, who include war participants, those who worked on defense bases or on the home front at that time, the Siege of Leningrad survivors, and other categories.
