In the winter semester of 2023/24, around 14,625 students in Germany were studying agriculture. This was a decrease compared to the previous winter semester. Compared to other subject groups like law and economics or engineering, agricultural sciences are not very popular among students and are the second-smallest subject group when it comes to the number of students.

Winter semester starting times may differ in Germany depending on the type of higher education institution the course is taking place in and the federal state, but generally these semesters begin in October and finish at the end of March. The semester includes Christmas vacation and the so-called "lecture-free time" in February and March, during which students may combine vacation time, working on study projects and completing internships necessary for their course.
