The state of New Jersey has taken part in every presidential election contested in the U.S., voting for the nationwide winner in 42 of 59 elections, giving a success rate of 71 percent. New Jersey has voted for major party candidates in all contested elections, choosing the Republican nominee in 18 elections, and the Democratic nominee in 25, and splitting the electoral votes between both parties in the 1860 election. The Garden State has voted for the Democratic nominee in all elections since 1992, and in the 2020 election, Joe Biden won New Jersey's popular vote by a margin of 16 percent.
As of 2020, Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. president to have been born in New Jersey, although Woodrow Wilson declared New Jersey as his home state while in office, after moving there during his time at Princeton University.
Throughout the 19th century, New Jersey's allocation of electoral votes was between six and nine votes, however a surge in population growth saw this number rise to 17 by the 1960s. While the state is one of the most densely populated in the country, New Jersey's allocation of votes has gradually decreased in the past four decades, as its growth rate is relatively lower than other regions of the country.
