Nebraska has taken part in 39 U.S. presidential elections, awarding the majority of its electoral votes to the winning candidate on 25 occasions, giving a success rate of 64 percent. Nebraska has voted for the Republican candidate in thirty elections, Democrat in seven elections, and then splitting the electoral votes four to one in favor of the Republican nominee in the 2008 and 2020 elections. The 1964 election was the last time a Democrat won the state outright.
Split vote
Similarly to Maine, Nebraska does not award all of its electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote; since 1992, the most popular candidate receives two votes, while the remaining votes are respectively split among the most popular candidate in Nebraska's three districts. As mentioned, the 2008 election was the only time where the result had been split, until the 2020 election.
Nebraskans in elections
Gerald R. Ford is the only U.S. president to have been born in Nebraska, although he was raised and held public office in Michigan. The only other major party candidate to have had Nebraska as their home state was William Jennings Bryan, who ran as the Democratic nominee in the 1896, 1900 and 1908 elections (although he failed to win his home state in 1900). Nebraska's allocation of electoral votes grew to eight at the end of the nineteenth century, but gradually declined to five votes between 1928 and 1964; it is expected to remain at this number in the 2024 election.
