In 2024, China's press freedom index was at 23.36 points, a slight imporvement compared to the previous year. The press freedom index was used as an indicator to measure the level of freedom to journalists in the country with with 100 being the best possible score for the highest possible level of press freedom and zero the worst. China is at the tail end of the index, ranking 172th after Egypt and Myanmar among 180 surveyed countries.
According to the source, the Index ranks 180 countries and regions according to the level of freedom available to journalists. It is a snapshot of the press freedom situation based on an evaluation of the ability of journalists in each country and region as individuals and collectives to select, produce, and disseminate news in the public interest independent of political, economic, legal, and social interference and in the absence of threats to their physical and mental safety. It is not an indicator of the quality of journalism in each country or region.

From 85.01 to 100 points: Good situation
From 70.01 to 85 points: Satisfactory situation
From 55.01 to 70 points: Problematic situation
From 40.01 to 55 points: Difficult situation
From 0 to 40 points: Very serious situation
