Founded in 1997, it provides services such as search, maps, advertising, e-commerce, or taxi. The second-leading business on the list was Wildberries, founded in 2004, which was the largest online retailer in Russia and was estimated to be worth over seven billion U.S. dollars.

The study considered companies initially concentrating their business on the internet, in which more than a half of the income comes from the online activity. It looked at companies created in Russia or mostly operating on Russian market. It excluded Russian businesses of global corporations and companies largely working in the offline sector.
