In the years from 2015 to 2017, the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of maternal deaths with 82 fatalities. This was lower compared to the data from 2014 to 2016 when the state reported around 106 maternal deaths. Kerala reported six maternal deaths and was seen to have the lowest maternal mortality numbers.

The results have been derived by pooling three years of data to yield reliable estimates of maternal mortality. Further, in order to avoid undercounting due to factors such as out-migration, the actual number of maternal deaths for each state has been multiplied by a correction factor as stated by the source.
