Using Statcounter

Sync Your Google Keyword Data

Sync your Google keyword data with Statcounter and unlock the search terms and phrases visitors are using to find your website.

Keywords are the foundation of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and being able to track their performance is key to a successful content strategy.

Unfortunately, Google started withholding keyword data for organic search in 2011 so the majority of search queries coming from Google show a status of keywords not provided in analytics reports.

To remedy this, we have integrated Google Search Console keyword data into Statcounter, so you can access all available keyword data. Complete the following steps and begin tracking your keyword performance today.

  1. Register your website with Google Search Console

Sign in to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ with your Google account.

If you have not previously added your website, use the Add a Property button to enable management of your website on Google Search Console.

Follow the verification instructions to prove to Google that you are the webmaster/administrator of the site (there are a selection of methods for doing this).

  2. Allow Statcounter access to sync your keyword data

Log in to Statcounter and navigate to the project you just registered with Google Search Console. From the Settings section, select Sync Google Keywords from the navigation sidebar and continue the instructions.

On the Import Google Keywords page, Sign in with Google using this button.

After which you'll be asked to authorize Statcounter to view and manage Search Console data for the website(s) you have verified with Google. Click Allow.

  3. Select the correct website from your Google verified websites

This dropdown menu will show a list of all your Google verified websites. Select the website you want to sync with this project.

  4. Sync your Google keyword data

The last step is to Sync your Google keyword data with Statcounter. This may take some time depending on how much data there is in Google Webmaster Tools. Click the button and wait for the sync to complete.

Now that you have synced your Google keyword data, you can track performance in the Keyword Analysis report. Navigate to the Reports section of your project and in the Traffic widget, select Keywords and then Full Report at the bottom of the widget.

For some more detailed analysis on the data available from the Google Search Console, see our GWT Data (Google Webmaster Tools) report.

The sync process is WAY, WAY too slow and clunky. Why must it start at the earliest moment (2015!!). Then it goes day-by-day up to the present at about 3-4 seconds per day. There are 80,000 hours between now and Jan 1, 2015.
Most of the days that is "syncs" report back "no data...".
WHY ARE WE SYNCING IT THEN?
If it must be done this way, can you at least make it clear whether we can close the browser tab once the process has been started?
And maybe issue some kind of an update by email or something (or in the account's page) that the process has been completed with the *date and time* it was completed instead of the generic red text that says "it's been sync'ed".
WHEN was it synced? This time or was it the last time I did the sync?

This is taking FOREVER! It's going one day at a time, starting back in late 2014, and is taking about 5 seconds for each single day's KWs. At that rate the sync will take about 5 hours!

My question is why does Statcounter sees visits which are not detected by google analytic? A few days GA sees zero visits from a certain country while SC sees 7 a day, for example.

When filtering down results it is possible, for various reasons, that Google may have assigned particular visits to a different location. By changing the filter county you may be able to resolve the discrepancy. If you require more assistance our Support staff would be happy to assist you.

Under my "Keyword Activity" all search engines keywords are not shown, not only Google's. What is the point then paying for a counter that does not show any keywords? Also I don't want to allow anyone into my Google Search Console or any other access to.

Thanks for your comment. Most search engines are encrypting their keywords now so they are not available in the referring URL to any analytics service. One way to see Google keywords in Statcounter is to sync with Search Console.

I'm getting the message "There are no keywords for this date." and I'm unclear what that means and if that's because of a lack of traffic or I've missed something in the configuration of my site.

I also am not seeing the keyword data after linking the account successfully,

I followed the instructions, it did the sync, however, does not show the keyword next to where it says google.com unlike bing or other search engines. Please let me know what to do in order to see the search words. Thank you!
