Chris (クリス) is a character from The King of Fighters series. He is a member of Team Orochi (temporarily under disguised team name, "New Faces Team" in KOF '97). He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, and is the dark Orochi counterpart to Kyo in regards of his ability to wield dark flames.[1] His official nickname is "Tempo Mixer" (
Development
Chris and his teammates were created to offset the remaining top three characters. [2] Chris was chosen as the host for Orochi's awakened spirit, a concept that began early in the game's production. He was designed as a character who can "kill with an innocent smile."[1]
Personality
Chris is quite innocent, shy, cheerful, and has a heart of gold, though somewhat anti-social. He also seems to be quite soulful. In normal situations, Chris will try to be the mature one of the group, providing information for his teammates when necessary.[3] Chris appears as a well-mannered person, with him seemingly being a well-mannered young boy at a first glance.[4] Despite his generally prim and proper decorum, it's been noted that Chris also possesses a murderous intent that is even stronger than Shermie's, which ties into him being able to "kill with an innocent smile." Alluding to this secretly violent behavior, Chris's dialogue can be a bit precocious and arrogant, and he tends to taunt opponents in a way to deliberately offend them, even his bandmates. Whether he is aware of his own haughtiness remains to be seen.
When Chris was revived, his Orochi heritage was retained as well, though pays less heed to it than usual. While they take their roles as Heavenly Kings seriously even in their normal forms, their band popularity takes priority over destroying what would be their fans, opting instead to antagonize the Three Sacred Treasures, by planning to orchestrate a rift between Kyo and Yuki.

Fighting style
Chris, though lacking formal martial arts training, relies on his natural speed and mixes it with acrobatic maneuvers, which gives him a mixup-pressure-based fighting style that involves him playing mind games with his opponents. If going all-out, he can also use his speed to overwhelm opponents with rapid-blows and smashing strikes in a sequence.

- His quote during his SDM makes a reference to another SNK game, Crystalis. He is believed to be based on a character in the anime Armored Trooper Votoms.[1]
- Chris shares his height and weight with Rose Bernstein.
- Chris is also so far the only character via his HSDM of the Four Heavenly Kings to be able to manually access his other form. However, his portrait and current BGM do not change in both 2002 and Neowave until the former does in 2002 UM; even then, ending a round with a transformed-normal-Chris will have him revert back to his normal form in the next round.
- A transformed-normal-Chris also has access to the HSDM of his transformed counterpart as well.
- The other character capable of this, albeit belonging to the lesser Hakkeshus, and as a DM, is Leona, who can also transform back and forth between her normal and Orochi form, demonstrating her growing control over her bloodline.
- In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Chris was voted as the staff's twentieth favorite character. And in Neo Geo Freak's August 1998 issue, he was ranked as the 10th best character.[5]
- Chris’s back walk animation is very similar to moonwalking, likely as a tribute to Michael Jackson.
