Talk:Germany
A fact from Germany appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know? column on 3 June 2009. |
"step on" is used in the discussion about religions. While this uses simple words, it's a somewhat rare idiom and seems out of place, but I don't know what exactly to suggest instead.
Economy
[change source]I'm not an economist, but I think this article does not represent a neutral point of view (NPOV). According to the article, Germany's economy is suffering because Germany pays a lot of money to people who don't work (I am not quoting, but working from memory here). Is that the only reason, or the main reason? Are there possibly other reasons? Drkeithphd 22:24, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- In Germany we have the phenonema, that a lot of companies get extreme good results and fire people the same time, e.g. Deutsche Bank, Allianz, Siemens,... The incomes rise up lower thsan inflation rate for a long time, what means, even the people with work lose income. Nearly no one hires people. The fellowing problem is, that many people don't have enough income anymore and the private consum rises down. Germany is very good in export, but in the country only the discounters have a chance to sell something. The other thing is our extreme complicate taxtation. Big companies have the chance to pay nearly no taxes by a lot of legal tricks, others have to pay more, but the state is poor, what means nearly no investments by the state anymore (since the end of the 90's). And the third thing are the mistakes by the management of the unification of Western Germany and the GDR in 1990, what costs a lot every year. Espresso 23:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I´m from Germany and here many people think that the money for people, who don´t work is not very big!
- I'm also from Germany and I think in relation to other countries this money is big!
World War II
[change source]If there is a paragraph on WWII in the History section, the Nazi genocides should definitely be mentioned, since that is essential to understand the feelings of Central European people about the war. 84.1.190.90 15:07, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Map
[change source]The map in the infobox says that it shows a map of where Germany is in the world, but really shows a map of where Germany is in Europe. This should be changed. Lankiveil 07:43, 3 May 2007 (UTC).
- Actually it does both. The main section of the map is Europe, but the inset shows the main map's position on a global scale. -- Creol(talk) 07:47, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Very Good Article
[change source]I don't think this article is good enough. Firstly, it seems like a stub and secondly, the language is not exactly simple. Prime Contributer (talk) 12:12, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
And it isn't always correct either!
Comments from AE
[change source]- Reference #3 needs replacing/explaining. What does "cite web | Britannica quote" mean?
- Shouldn't "References" be before "Other websites"? Maybe not.
- "About three million Muslims live in Germany." Source? Maybe not.
- Trade school, Technical school and Social welfare all should be blue.
- If these are completed, I believe it is a GA. TheAE talk 00:37, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- Done to all. I'm opening up voting. ^_^ Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz! 00:57, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
My concerns before becoming a GA
[change source]- "in the middle of Europe" - not really, not since the inclusion of all the Eastern states. I'd remove "the middle of" and stick to clarity - it's south of Poland, east of France etc.
- "It is an important country in international politics." this is really vague and unnecessary. This could be said of pretty much any European country, UK, France, Spain or further afield, China, Russia, Japan, USA, Canada... it might as well say "It is an actual country and it actually has political significance"...
- "West Germany was one of the countries..." - confusing in this one paragraph lead (i.e. expand the lead) - need to be clear on what Germany and West Germany mean with relation to one another. The lead needs, desperately, to contain some overview of the Berlin Wall and the separation/reunion. It's probably the most significant set of events in the country's history.
- "...(only the 3rd part)..." what does that mean? (infobox, anthem)
- "1806 the time of the Napoleonic Wars." comma needed after 1806.
- Treaty is not Simple.
- "The Kings of Prussia were also "German Emperors" they did not call themselves "Emperors of Germany". Is there a "but" or "however" missing here?
- "...an empire with many different kinds of people..." what does this mean?
- "...war became slow in the west..." not Simple.
- Why is trenches in italics?
- " fought normal battles" - what is a "normal battle"?
- " second Reich " or "Second Reich"? Consistency required.
- Then "Third Reich" in quotes...
- " harsh restrictions" isn't Simple.
- "bad money problems" this is unclear. Presumably "bad" is being used to mean "serious" or "severe" - this needs clarification.
- Head of government doesn't need a capital H for head in its use here.
- " Hitler in effect assumed dictatorial powers." - is in no way Simple English.
- Nor is "Hitler sought to unify all Germans in one state, and did this by uniting ethnic lands where Germans lived in Austria, Czechoslovakia with the German Republic"...
- "radical, aggressive, and arrogant" none of these words are particularly Simple, none are linked.
- "the Baltic states" - needs linking.
- "After the decisive Battle of Kursk" - what makes it "decisive", what does "decisive" mean and what was the "Battle or Kursk"?
- "Oder-Neiße line" needs linking, and why is it in italics?
- "end of Socialism in Europe in 1990," - what?! Socialism still exists in Europe, right?
- "a group of countries that want to bring all of Europe together for reasons of politics, defence, and economy." pure subjectivity and POV. Reference out to EU objectives please.
Not reviewing further than this section, just the History section has enough to worry me now. Once these are dealt with, nine more sections to go! The Rambling Man (talk) 17:35, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- I've worked on most of those. I think Barras said he'll update the lead. Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz! 19:14, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Further sections reviewed
[change source]- Please place citations after punctuation where possible, so "...democracy[4]." should be "democracy.[4]" Done
- Politics section has precisely zero references, not good enough. Done
- Infobox says "Here is the country on a map of the world." - it's predominantly where Germany is on a map of Western Europe actually. And yes, I know the infobox is to blame, but for this to become one of our better articles, it needs to be fixed.
- This is a problem of the infobox. See the VGA Romania which use it the same way. I think we can't do anything. Barras (talk) 21:50, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- Of course we can. We fix the infobox. The Romania VGA is not a good example - see the talkpage for plenty of things that needed to be fixed. I've yet to push to to WP:PAD but unless the things I've noted are fixed, Romania will soon become a GA. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:54, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- This may be what we're looking for. I'd do it myself, but my knowledge of template coding isn't very good. Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz! 22:01, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- The template is fixed by an other user. Barras (talk) 08:03, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

- "114 Independent cities" why is independent capitalised? Does it mean something important? If so, it needs explanation. Done
- Typo - "streches" Done
- Why do we have two decimal places for altitude in feet?
- Is that a problem?
- Geography section is completed unsourced. Done
- Same with Economy. Done
- " Bringing West and East Germany together and making their economy work is still taking a long time and costing a lot of money; the west gives about $100 billion to the east a year. Germans hope that because of the new form of money, the Euro used in most countries in Europe, and because Europe is coming closer together, this will help Germany's economy in the early 21st century." is 100% WP:OR. It is unacceptable and should not form the basis of one our better articles. Reference it or remove it. Done (removed by Shappy)
No more reviewing once more until these are dealt with. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:18, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- all is Done - Can you review the other sections? Thanks Barras (talk) 08:56, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Comments
[change source]- In the "people" section, there's part of a sentence that makes no sense: " o.7% of Germans the people (mostly in the south).[" What does "(1)" mean in "There are also many Muslims (1), "
- Does the manual of style say whether to say "2/3" or "two thirds" or "two-thirds"? Some fractions are in words and some are in numbers. Make them all words, or all numbers.
- I changed a few other things. I hope I helped a little. ☺Coppertwig(talk) 15:34, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the help. your points are done. Barras (talk) 18:39, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Further review
[change source]- Typo with Czechoslovakia.
- Done
- History section has one citation which really is not enough for seven paragraphs of claims.
- We don't need feet to two decimal places thanks.
- Done
- "biggest and most important rivers" what do you mean by biggest? Longest perhaps? And what makes them "important"?
- Done
- "(Only the United States and Japan are more powerful.) " why in parentheses?
- Done
- "Germany has the world's third largest technologically powerful economy." really needs citation.
- Done (reworded)
- "the west gives about $100 billion to the east a year" - not sure about this at all. There is no west/east now, so this becomes confusing.
- Done
- "but today the number is smaller (about 50,000 in 2003)." smaller than what? And it's now 2009, so can we have some up to date figures?
- Done
- By "people live in Schleswig" do you mean Schleswig-Holstein?
- Done
- "1980 – 1999 totals" what? And remove spaces...
- Done
- "are 34% o.7% of Germans the people (mostly in the south)" this doesn't make any sense.
- Done
- "There are also many Muslims (1)" just one?
- Done
- GDR and FDR should have been discussed before the People section.
- "Germany has one of the world's highest levels of schooling, technology, and businesses. The number of young people who start going to universities is now more than three times as big as it was after the end of World War II, and the trade and technical schools of Germany are some of the best in the world. Germans each make about $25,000 a year, so Germany is a very middle class society. A large social welfare system gives people money when they are ill or cannot find a job, and other things the people need. Millions of Germans travel outside their country each year" all of this could just be someone's opinion without references.
- No bare URLs in the references please. Use something like {{cite web}} Done
Enough for now. More to come should it be required. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:51, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
inf. West Germany?
[change source]What does inf. mean? It is not an abbreviation that we use auf englisch. Varlaam (talk) 20:33, 21 January 2011 (UTC) (aus Kanada)
Republics in the Holy Roman Empire?

Which republics were part of the Empire? Varlaam (talk) 20:50, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
Germany in Western Europe
[change source]Germany is not, and has never been, part of Western Europe. It is solely Central Europe. It's maybe not really important for Simple Wikipedia, but might still be worth to rectify it.
Nazi Germany image
[change source]A map of Nazi Germany is the first image in history. There should be a more appropriate image as the first image in history of Germany. Texan777 (talk) 23:50, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
