Gregory IX (Latin: Gregorius Nonus; c. 1145 – 22 August 1241), born Ugolino dei Conti di Segni, was an Italian priest of the Roman Catholic Church and the 178th Pope from 19 March 1227 until his death in 1241.[1]
Early life
[change | change source]The Count of Segni lived in Anagni when his son Ugolino was born. The exact date of this birth is not known, but it was around 1145. Ugolino was a nephew of Pope Innocent III.[2]
Cardinal
[change | change source]He was created Cardinal in 1198.[2]
Pope
[change | change source]Cardinal di Conti was elected pope in 1227. He chose to be called Pope Gregory.[3]
