The Academy of Unseen Arts is a boarding school for witches and warlocks and is located in Gehenna Station. Initially, the academy formed satanic witches, but following the conversion of the Church of Night to the Order of Hecate, the academy was dedicated to the Triple Goddess.

History

The Academy was built according to the principles of sacred geometry. Each room is a perfectly proportioned pentagon that locks with the one next to it. The Sanctum, the library for advanced students, has Edward Spellman's journals under lock and key. The foyer had a statue of the Dark Lord in the center of the room, but after it was destroyed by Witch-hunters, Faustus Blackwood replaced it with a statue of himself, which was later beheaded by Prudence. Students sleep in common rooms divided by gender, while the faculty has personal accommodation and offices. The Academy also has a prison where guilty witches and warlocks await their punishment. The prison was also used during the Harrowing, a trial that freshmen were subjected to.

The Academy has many rules, as discovered by Sabrina when she enrolled. Familiars are not permitted at the academy. The reason for this is not elaborated upon, though Zelda states that only "babies and ninnies take their familiars to school" and witches that do bring them are ridiculed, indicating it's a sign of weakness. During her studying years, Hilda was bullied for this reason. In particular by her sister Zelda.

According to Zelda, the Academy is a place to have the best philosophical and occult conversations by participating in symposia with other witches and warlocks. When Edward Spellman was a student, his peers were bewitched by his charisma and his daughter Sabrina echoed it when students started gathering around her after she saved them from the Order of the Innocents. Father Blackwood teased Sabrina's dislike for the rules by inviting her to challenge traditions when he wanted to convince the teenage witch to sign the Book of the Beast.

The Curriculum is demanding and lectures are divided according to difficulty and aptitude levels. Classes such as Herbalism and Latin can also be curriculum majors and students can choose what their focus of study can be. Additionally, classes such as Conjuring can only be taken once the Academy's general requirements are fulfilled as explained by Father Blackwood to Sabrina. These requirements have not been explained. Tests, however, can be performed to determine whether a student is ready to take a class should the requirements not be previously met.

According to Lucifer, after the Academy got be dedicated to Order of Hecate, softer and more feminine energies run the place.

Trivia

• The walls of the Academy are aligned with a collection of over 150 paintings from accomplished horror writer Clive Barker, the horror visionary behind Hellraiser and Candyman.
• Since the school is designed to be a series of identically shaped rooms, designed after the practice of sacred geometry, they only needed to build one interchangeable set for a majority of the rooms.
• According to Ambrose Spellman, the students are from all over the world.
• The faculty members who Faustus Blackwood introduce Zelda to in "Chapter Twelve: The Epiphany" are named after famous horror writers of the turn of the 20th century:
  • Brothers Machen, Lovecraft and Bierce take their names from authors Arthur Machen, H.P. Lovecraft and Ambrose Bierce while Sister Jackson is based on Shirley Jackson.
  • Sister Carswell, instead, is a reference to Carswell Prison, whose medical facility has a reputation for being haunted.
  • The supernatural and cosmic horror themes of their works are constantly referenced throughout Part 2. For example, the Cthulhu Mythos that are also present in many Archie Horror comics.
  • Faculty instructors Jackson, Bierce, Lovecraft, all are named after American authors of The Macabre.
• Some of the students are orphans who are taken care of by the Academy.
• The Academy doesn’t have classes. Instead, it has lectures.
• The student's eating rations are kept low to keep them starving for power.
• In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics, specifically Issue #7, "The Truth About Demonology", the Academy is called Ministry of the Invisible Arts, "where all young witches and warlocks of breeding learned their trade". In the first issue, it was referred to as the "Academy of the Unseen".
• "Gehenna Station" is a reference to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics, specifically Issue #2, "The Secret History of Madam Satan". The Pits of Gehenna is the Circle of Hell where Iola a.k.a. Madam Satan was punished after her suicide before being resurrected in Greendale.
• The statue of Baphomet with Children at the entrance of the Academy is a replica of a statue of the Satanic Temple located in Salem, Massachusetts and sculpted by Mark Porter.
  • On November 21, 2018, the Satanic Temple reached an amicable settlement with Warner Brothers over the use of the Baphomet with Children statue. A spokesperson for the Temple stated that the statue would get proper credit in the credits for the subsequent episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. True enough, "Chapter Eleven: A Midwinter's Tale" reflects such acknowledgements in the episode's credits and is the first to do so.
