The New York Post (or the New York comPost) is an American daily tabloid newspaper that has operated continuously since its founding by Alexander Hamilton in 1801.[1] It is the oldest continuously-published daily in the US,[2] and the 13th oldest newspaper in the country. Throughout its history, the Post has switched political leanings several times; for much of the 20th century, it was a liberal, actively pro-labor paper. Then, in 1976, Rupert Murdoch bought the paper and turned it into New York City's voice of wingnut yellow journalism. (Similarly, his British paper The Sun was originally a left-wing paper which evolved out of the trade union-affiliated Daily Herald.) It is a favorite for anti-libertarian big government conservatives of the North who support gun control for black people.

Today, the paper is known for its racy front pages, which include screaming headlines[3] and juxtapositions that would be considered inappropriate in other papers.[note 1]

Why nobody takes it seriously[edit]

  • On December 11, 1980, the Post ran a large morgue photo of John Lennon on its front page.
  • On June 16, 1986, based on information planted by spooks reliable sources, the Post ran a front page story that Muammar al-Gaddafi was really a drug-addicted cross-dresser. The headline: MADMAN MOAMMAR NOW A DRUGGIE DRAG QUEEN. The picture: Gaddafi wearing lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, hoop earrings and a permed, spit-curled, middle-aged woman's hair style.[4]
  • On February 17, 2009, the Post ran a cartoon about two NYPD officers who had just shot dead a chimpanzee. The dialog balloon of one of the officers read, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."[5]
  • In November 2009, Sandra Guzman, a Latina who was fired as an associate editor after protesting the "chimp cartoon",[note 2] claimed that the newsroom at the Post was operated like a racist, sexist frat house. She also claimed that the Washington, D.C. bureau chief stated that his objective was to "destroy Barack Obama."[6]
  • On April 15, 2013, during the Boston Marathon bombing,Wikipedia the New York Post decided that there was no need to seek actual professionals investigating the incident when you have the armchair vigilantes of 4chan and Reddit to do the work for them. Based on the obviously 100% correct detective work of the online mob, the Post identified two men of Arab descent that obviously were the correct suspect. So they ran a headline with a photo of them suggesting that the Feds were seeking the two for questioning. Unsurprisingly, the mob, and the New York Post, were completely wrong. Oops.[7][8]
  • On March 2, 2014, a Post hack argued that NBA owner Donald Sterling's punishment for a record of racism was equivalent to being "lynched."[9]
  • On September 28, 2014, the Post exhibited their long-time displeasure of the Clintons by... mocking their day-old grandchild.[10]
  • Laughable levels of red-baiting, to the point of calling Bernie Sanders a communist for disagreeing with US foreign policy during the Cold War. They even photoshopped an image of his head on Lenny's.[11]
  • On October 14, 2020, a Post staff reporter, who was forced to write a hit piece involving Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden, refused to put his name on the article when it was published; many other staff members also voiced concern about the authenticity of the information. The article instead ran under the byline of a scapegoat new employee, and another reporter who only learned that her byline was on the story after the story was published.[12] Several intelligence officers believed that this information (pushed by Rudy Giuliani) was actually Russian disinformation, pushed by a Ukrainian lawmaker named Andriy Derkach who Giuliani was regularly in contact with.[13] It was discovered that the story does indeed merit some truths in 2022, but an investigation by the Washington Post authenticated only 20,000 emails.[14]
  • On December 12, 2020, the Post published an article revealing to the public that a random paramedic was selling nude photos online to "make ends meet".[15][16] The Post made sure to dox her and contact her employer multiple times for good measure.[17][15]
  • On April 28, 2021, a Post staff reporter named Laura Italiano, who was forced to write some propaganda bullshit about Kamala Harris's children's book Superheroes Are Everywhere,Wikipedia later regretted the decision to not push back and resigned from the Post. She announced her resignation on Twitter with a public denouncement of her own story.[18][19]
  • On March 4, 2023, the Post published an article titled, "Desperate NYC addict leaves items for possible meth cooking attempt all over subway". Attached photos showed scattered dog food, Tylenol, sugar packets, and anti-allergy medicine (Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra). The article itself notes these particular pills "all lacked the chemical pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient for making meth." No indication they were left behind by an "addict" is given other than speculation from random people nearby.[20]

Snark[edit]

In the 1980s, Murdoch asked a friend of his (the CEO of an upscale department store chain) why his stores didn't advertise in the Post. The friend's reply: "But, Rupert, your readers are my shoplifters."[21]

Notes[edit]

  1. ie. After the 5 November 2009 shootings at Fort Hood, the Post placed a boxed headline on the front page that claimed that the feds knew about the instability of the shooter. Beside that box was another box with a story about Jennifer Lopez's temporary restraining order against somebody who wanted release a sex tape of her. That box included a glamour photo of JLo in a formal dress with a plunging neckline that showed off her cleavage.
  2. Officially, she was fired in October 2009, because her section of the paper had been discontinued. But, well, you know...
