Abstract

A brake rotor refinishing system provides simultaneously refinishing of two workpieces that are clamped at opposite ends of a duplex chuck, when the chuck is installed on a machine spindel. The duplex chuck has respectives sets of jaws that are independently driven by separate pinion elements. In the case of disk brake rotors, opposite sides of both workpieces are finished simultaneously. The system also includes a refinishing machine that incorporates the spindle and a machining mechanism having cutting elements for simultaneously refinishing opposite sides of a pair of disk rotors.

Claim

What is claimed is: 1. A duplex chuck for refinishing differently configured rotor workpieces on a spindle member having a clamping arbor nut, each rotor workpiece having a centering diameter and a rotor mounting surface, the duplex chuck comprising: (a) a chuck body having a body bore for locating on the spindle member and rotation therewith, respective pluralities of radially oriented first and second jaw slots being formed in respective opposite ends of the chuck body; (b) respective sets of first and second chuck jaws for slidably engaging the first and second jaw slots of the chuck body, the jaw members of each set having respective shoulder surfaces for engaging the centering diameter of one of the rotor workpieces; (c) first and second scroll members rotatably mounted in the body for radially advancing corresponding first and second chuck jaws when the jaws are engaging the first and second jaw slots; (d) a first pinion member rotatably mounted in the chuck body and having geared engagement with the first scroll member for rotation thereof; and (e) a second pinion member rotatably mounted in the chuck body and having geared engagement with the second scroll member for rotation thereof, the pluralities of first and second chuck jaws being independently advanceable in response to corresponding rotation of the first and second pinion members. 2. The duplex chuck of claim 1, wherein the first and second pinion members are rotatable on respective pinion axes, the pinion axes extending in a common plane perpendicular to the body bore. 3. The duplex chuck of claim 1, wherein at least some of the centering diameters are inside diameters, and the shoulder surfaces of at least one of the sets of chuck jaws face outwardly. 4.

Abstract

A quick-release multi-drive drill motor chuck for receiving a rotary tool is provided. The chuck body has a first end, a second end, and an axis and a defined cylindrical bore from the first end toward the second end. The chuck body defines a plurality of orifices extending from the bore at a finite distance from the first end, the chuck body defining a keyway or relief embodiment in the first end. A plurality of detent balls are disposed in the plurality of orifices such that one ball is placed inside of each orifice. A collar having an axis is disposed concentrically around the chuck body in axial slip fit relationship, such that slipping the collar axially along the chuck body will alternately expose the orifices to either the inner wall or a recess, thereby positioning said recess for receiving the detent balls.

Abstract

A brake apparatus engages and locks a piston of a hydraulic elevator drive carrying an elevator car or a cable pulley. The brake apparatus includes a pair of opposed pivotally mounted brake arms each having a curved support carrying a brake lining for engaging the exterior surface of the piston. Each brake lining is formed by bending a planar body at a plurality of the vertical grooves formed in a contact surface to define planar sections. The lining is attached to the support with the sections spaced from the curved support surface. As the brake linings are brought into engagement with the piston surface, the compression forces are evenly distributed by the planar sections functioning as springs.

Claim

What is claimed is: 1. A brake lining for use in a brake apparatus for a hydraulic elevator for the locking of a generally cylindrical load carrying piston guided in a hydraulic cylinder, the brake lining comprising: a generally planar brake lining body having an upper edge and a generally parallel lower edge, said brake lining body adapted to be bent to generally conform to a curvature of a piston exterior surface; an inwardly facing contact surface formed on said brake lining body for frictional engagement with an exterior surface of a hydraulic elevator piston when said brake lining body is bent, said contact surface extending a width of said brake lining body and downwardly from said upper edge; and a plurality of spaced apart grooves formed in said contact surface extending from said upper edge toward said lower edge, said grooves permitting bending of said brake lining body at said grooves. 2. The brake lining according to claim 1 including an inwardly facing recessed portion formed on said brake lining body proximate said contact surface, a plane of said recessed portion being parallel to and offset from a plane of said contact surface, and an angled portion extending between said contact surface and said recessed portion providing a transition between said contact surface and said recessed portion. 3. The brake lining according to claim 2 wherein said contact surface, said recessed portion and said angled portion extend generally parallel between side edges of said brake lining body. 4.

Abstract

Improvements in a rotor runout and concentricity jig that mimics the runout and/or concentricity of an axle of a vehicle that can be transferred to a rotor. The jig uses discs with high and low points and/or two eccentric tubes. The parts can be adjusted from in-phase to out of phase to duplicate the characteristics of the axle. The adjustments have incremental detents that correspond with the imperfections of the axle to rotor. The position of the rotor is marked on the axle and the rotor to ensure that the rotor is placed onto the axle in the exact same location. The axle and the rotor are cleaned, reinstalled and measured for runout and concentricity. The rotor is then removed and inaccuracies for runout and/or concentricity are transferred to the jig for machining the rotor.

Abstract

An adaptor for refinishing brake disk rotors includes a first flange member having a flange bore for closely fitting a rotatably mounted machine spindle member. The first flange member has an annular flange surface perpendicular to the flange bore for axial registration of the disk rotor, and a cavity for receiving a portion of the disk rotor. In one configuration, the adaptor includes a disk member having an accurately formed disk bore for closely fitting the spindle member, and an external shoulder for radial registration of a centering diameter of the rotor; and a second flange member for clamping the mounting flange against the flange surface by a clamping nut of the spindle member, whereby the disk rotor rotates rigidly with the spindle member. In another configuration, the first flange member has a set of movable jaws for radially clamping against the centering diameter.

Abstract

This invention includes a brake system for a hydraulic ram or another cylinder, that can be employed as an emergency brake for a lifting elevator. When actuated, the brake arms contact the ram circumferentially to slow and stop the falling ram. The brake arms are preferably lined with an able material that frictionally engages the ram to stop the downward motion of the ram. The brake system may be actuated by loss of hydraulic pressure, by an electronic signal from a hydraulic pressure detector, by down overspeed sensor or by an uncontrolled down motion detector. According to another aspect of the present invention, a controller, which is preferably a programmed control system, compares the actual motion of the elevator as sensed by a detector to a desired motion. Under certain conditions, if the actual motion differs from the desired motion, the controller actuates the brake.
