Abstract

A steering column and cowl support frame for vehicles having a fiber glass body is disclosed. The support frame comprises a pair of opposed rear braces vertically abutting the inside surface of opposed side walls of the cowl and a pair of opposed front braces extending downward and forward from an upper end of the rear braces. Upper gussets join the upper ends of the front and rear opposed braces together and lower gussets attach a lower end of the front braces to the vehicle frame. A rear portion of the gussets extends rearward a distance and then outward at a rear edge of the cowl to form door hinge supports. A cross brace extends transversely across the vehicle. A pedal support extends longitudinally between the cross brace and a fire wall of the cowl. A horizontal wall of the cross brace is attached at a rear end thereof to the cross brace, and a pair of opposed downward extending vertical walls integral with the top wall support a pair of opposed outward projecting pedal support bushings for the brake and clutch pedals of the vehicle. The steering column has an outward projecting flange at its lower end abutting the floor pan.

Abstract

A cooling method and system are provided wherein a stream of relatively wet warm air is passed in contact with a liquid hygroscopic material in a water cooled absorbent zone to produce a stream of relatively cool dry air. The latter is then passed through an evaporative cooling zone in contact with water and the resulting cooled air or water is used as a cooling or refrigerating medium. A portion of the cooled water is used to cool the absorbent zone to an extent that the dried stream of air has a greater capacity to evaporatively cool the water than it would have in the absence of such cooling, thereby permitting the production of desired stream of cool, dry air. The relatively wet liquid hygroscopic material resulting from the drying of the air as above mentioned, is then passed as a film through a heating zone wherein it is exposed to solar heat or other low level heat to evaporate absorbed water from the hygroscopic material with the evaporated water being swept away from the film by a stream of ambient air which is ultimately discharged to the atmosphere.
A method and apparatus are also provided for contacting a gas and a liquid to facilitate a mass exchange therebetween, especially when the volume of the liquid is small compared to that of the gas and where extensive contact between the liquid and gas is necessary to achieve the desired mass exchange. Also, provision is made for removing heat from the liquid during its contact with the gas.

Small particle identification is disclosed. A high intensity light source provides light at a sensing region for contact with small particles at the sensing region to cause resulting light that includes scattered light and emitted light due to heating of optically absorbing particles to incandescence with the resulting light terminating if vaporization of the optically absorbing particles occurs. A laser, having a laser cavity with the sensing region within the laser cavity, preferably provides high intensity laser light in the laser cavity for contact with the small particles at the sensing region. Utilizing optical detection, predetermined particle characteristic determination is enabled, including particle size and composition of optically absorbing particles.

Abstract

A process is provided for recovering oxygen from air and particularly providing a product stream comprising a mixture of oxygen and steam useful, for example, in coal gasification processes. The instant process involves contacting a suspension of manganese dioxide in an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide with air in a low pressure absorbing zone. The resulting liquid oxygen enriched stream is then pumped into a relatively high pressure generating zone where it is contacted with steam to release oxygen absorbed in the absorbing zone and thereby provide the above mentioned product.

Abstract

A rear leaf spring support for vehicles having a frame which includes a pair of spaced apart side members tapering inward from a rear portion of the vehicle to a front portion of the vehicle is disclosed. A pair of shackle supports, one for each spring, are affixed the frame at the frame rear portion. A pair of front spring supports, one for each spring are affixed a lower flange of the frame vertically above a forward end of the spring. Each front spring support comprises an upper wall affixed a lower flange of the frame side member, an inner edge aligned with an inner edge of the shackle support integral with the upper wall, an outer edge spaced outward from the frame aligned with an outer edge of the shackle support integral with the upper wall, the inner and outer walls extending downward a distance parallel to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle. A forward end of the spring is positioned between the inner and outer walls and pivotally attached thereto. A pair of opposed shackle links interconnect a rear end of the spring to the shackle supports.
