Aims and scope

BMJ Quality & Safety provides a rich mix of opinion, debate and research for academics, clinicians, healthcare managers and policy makers. The Journal encourages research and debate about improving the quality and safety of healthcare. It is led by patient-focused editors who seek to help a wide range of international readers — including clinicians, researchers, patients, improvement professionals, administrators and policy makers — to gain knowledge about improving patient care. The journal integrates the academic and clinical aspects of quality and safety in healthcare by encouraging academics to create evidence and knowledge valued by clinicians, and clinicians to value using evidence and knowledge to improve quality. A wide range of topics can be in scope, if they have practical implications for the quality and safety of patient care. However, several topics are out of scope including pharmacovigilance and studies that seek to establish the intrinsic effectiveness of therapeutic interventions such as drugs, devices, and procedures. We also do not publish protocols. Please see the following editorials that provide additional information about our mission, scope, and what we consider to be important topics in our field: Browne J, Franklin BD, Thomas EJ, et al. Our mission and how we hope to move the field forward: statement from the BMJ Quality & Safety senior editorial team 2023. BMJ Quality & Safety 2024;33:141-144. Franklin BD, Thomas EJ, Replicating and publishing research in different countries and different settings: advice for authors. BMJ Quality & Safety 2022;31:627-630. BMJ Open Quality is a companion journal to BMJ Quality & Safety. The impact that academic research has cannot be defined by one single metric. In 2013, BMJ signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). We did this to show our support for using multiple measures and metrics to portray journals’ impact; moving away from the Impact Factor as a single measure. How we get these metrics
