Military Sexual Trauma

One of my top priorities is making sure that we are doing everything we can to help and support our men and women in uniform who were sexually assaulted during their service. Below you'll find more information on the legislation and policies I'm advocating for to end military sexual assault and support survivors.

Legislation and Policy

  • I have proudly reintroduced The Service Member and Veterans’ Empowerment and Support Act, which would improve resources and care for survivors of military sexual trauma (MST).
  • I am an original cosponsor of the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act to create an independent system for members of our armed forces to report the harassment or assault they've suffered.
  • I have also proudly cosponsored the VA Peer Support Enhancement for MST Survivors Act to ensure veteran survivors of MST have access to peer support specialists trained to assist them in navigating the disability compensation process.
  • Over the past decade, I lead the charge to reform Question 21 on the Security Clearance Questionnaire, which asks applicants to disclose mental health counseling they have received. More here.
  • As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veteran Affairs, I recently asked Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis R. McDonough for his commitment to examine and ease the evidentiary standard for disability claims filed by survivors of MST.
