Charlton 4-4 West Ham

Jonatan Johansson's stoppage time overhead kick rescued Charlton in a thrilling London derby.

Former Charlton youth team player Jermain Defoe looked to have snatched the points for West Ham with a well-taken volley six minutes from the end.

I thought it was our game at 3-2, I couldn't see them scoring,
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley

Paul Kitson, in his first start for 21 months, had earlier claimed a hat-trick to give West Ham the lead and then twice put them level.

But the Finnish striker Johansson, who had put Charlton 3-2 ahead after the restart, equalised with a superb overhead kick in the game's dying moments.

Charlton's other goals came from Jason Euell in a game which saw the lead change four times.

Two seasons ago, Kitson had been on loan at Charlton.

But on his return to The Valley he gave West Ham the perfect start after only three minutes.

He collected Paolo di Canio's superb pass, chested the ball down, and then sent a powerful half-volley past Dean Kiely.

With West Ham dominating the early exchanges, Kiely made a superb one-handed save from Kitson.

Trevor Sinclair had broken clear on the right and cut back the ball for Kitson, who hit a precise shot, which Kiely just managed to get a hand on.

Premiership reputation

Charlton gradually forced their way back into the match, but they were given a huge helping hand by some uncertain West Ham defending.

First on 21 minutes Shaka Hislop was uncertain in dealing with Christian Dailly's backward header from a Chartlon free-kick.

With Hislop dithering, Euell slotted the ball home.

Seven minutes later, Tomas Repka carelessly gave the ball to Johansson, whose deflected shot reached Euell.

The former Wimbledon player made no mistake as he curled the ball past Hislop.

Within 60 seconds Kitson had restored parity for West Ham.

Di Canio was once more the creator, releasing Scott Minto into acres of space.

The former Chelsea player crossed quickly and Kitson finished skilfully.

Soon after the restart Charlton had regained the lead.

It was probably the right result
West Ham manager Glenn Roeder

Scott Parker's pass split the West Ham back three and Johansson slid the ball under Hislop.

Back came West Ham, with Kitson once again the saviour.

Di Canio crossed to the far post, Sinclair knocked the ball back and Kitson scored from close-range.

Thrilling stuff, but it was a game that did little to enhance the Premiership's reputation for quality defending.
