McClaren praised Robson

He paid tribute to his successor Bryan Robson as he said: "Bryan brought great successes to the club in his seven years. He was involved in the new stadium, new training facilities and bringing in big signings.

"He was instrumental in giving Middlesbrough such a high profile, both in the Premier League and in world football.

"I can't wait for the players to report back next month and get out on the training ground with them.

"I have also proved I am capable of taking the big and tough decisions, having taken one by leaving a club such as Manchester United for Middlesbrough.

"But it was also an easy decision in some respects, because of the ambition and vision of the people I met from Middlesbrough."

McClaren will add new faces to his backroom staff and will also plunge into the transfer market, but insisted: "All the players here will be given a chance."

Crozier already in talks

Middlesbrough have already contacted FA chief executive Adam Crozier to give permission for McClaren to be used in the England set-up.

And McClaren, who impressed coach Eriksson, said: "I have yet to discuss this with Adam Crozier or Sven, but that is a possibility.

"But to be involved with England is good for the profile of the club and myself, and if we are aiming to bring big players in, then we will have to have a high profile.

"But I must stress that my first and only priority is Middlesbrough."
