Steve McClaren left "the comfort zone" of coaching to become Middlesbrough's new manager - and is now poised to rejoin Sven Goran Eriksson's England set-up.

McClaren has switched from being Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United to take up his first managerial role at the Riverside.

He turned down West Ham United and Southampton to join Middlesbrough.

  McClaren's rise
1978: Signs for Hull City and scores 16 goals in 178 games
1985: Joins Derby County and his spell includes a loan move to Lincoln
1988: Signs for Bristol City
1990: Joins Oxford United
1995: Quits as Oxford youth team coach to become assistant manager at Derby
February 1999: Becomes assistant manager at Man Utd
November 2000: Assistant to then caretaker England coach Peter Taylor as England lose friendly against Italy 1-0
30 March: His continued involvement in England set up is blocked by Ferguson
12 June: Becomes Middlesbrough manager

McClaren was unveiled at a news conference on Tuesday, signing a five-year contract after several weeks of speculation linking him with the role.

And he is now likely to move back into the England set up after Middlesbrough gave him permission to link up again with Eriksson and Peter Taylor.

McClaren's first task is to assess his Middlesbrough squad, and he said: "It was perhaps the hardest decision I have had to make in my career, but one thing I learned at Manchester United is that you quickly move on to the next step.

"The next step in my career was management and I am incredibly excited by the job here at Middlesbrough.

"I have had a great time at Manchester United, working with a fantastic manager and great players, but as soon as I met the chairman Steve Gibson I had no hesitation in taking up the opportunity."

McClaren added: "As soon as I found out where they wanted to go and how ambitious they were, it really excited me."

He paid tribute to his successor Bryan Robson as he said: "Bryan brought great successes to the club in his seven years. He was involved in the new stadium, new training facilities and bringing in big signings.

"He was instrumental in giving Middlesbrough such a high profile, both in the Premier League and in world football.

"I can't wait for the players to report back next month and get out on the training ground with them.

"I have also proved I am capable of taking the big and tough decisions, having taken one by leaving a club such as Manchester United for Middlesbrough.

"But it was also an easy decision in some respects, because of the ambition and vision of the people I met from Middlesbrough."

McClaren will add new faces to his backroom staff and will also plunge into the transfer market, but insisted: "All the players here will be given a chance."

Crozier already in talks

Middlesbrough have already contacted FA chief executive Adam Crozier to give permission for McClaren to be used in the England set-up.

And McClaren, who impressed coach Eriksson, said: "I have yet to discuss this with Adam Crozier or Sven, but that is a possibility.

"But to be involved with England is good for the profile of the club and myself, and if we are aiming to bring big players in, then we will have to have a high profile.

"But I must stress that my first and only priority is Middlesbrough."
