The police have said they believe dissident republicans were responsible for a pipe bomb attack on a police officer's home in Annalong, County Down.

It was the second time the officer's home has been attacked.

The policeman, who has lived in the south Down area all his life, found the crude bomb under a shovel in a shed at the back of his house on the Glass Drummond Road on Thursday.

He believes it was left there some time on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Army bomb disposal experts made the device safe on Thursday night.

Inspector Ronnie Neill from Kilkeel police station said they now believed dissident republicans had carried out the attack.

He said the officer had been lucky not to have been killed.

"We could have been faced with a fatality if he had gone into the shed and the device had activated," he said.

"This is a cowardly attack carried out by persons who had a clear intent to kill or maim this police officer, a police officer who has served the community for some 20 years and is well respected in the area."
