More snow is forecast to fall on the Yorkshire coast

Drivers faced treacherous conditions on roads between Whitby and Scarborough and the A64 Scarborough to York road.

The A170 Scarborough to Thirsk road was closed following an accident involving a gritter lorry.

The Met Office predicts more snow in northern England and snow showers in parts of Norfolk and Suffolk.

One woman was taken to hospital in Scarborough after a collision between two vehicles on the A169 near Yedingham on Monday and racing has been abandoned at Catterick, officials confirmed.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk on Monday, with up to 10cm (3.9 inches) predicted to fall on the North York Moors by the evening.

Central and southern parts of England may see a light scattering of snow.

Icy winds from the North Pole will push southwards across Scotland and down into England producing some of the coldest weather of the winter.

Police are warning motorists not to venture out unless their journey is unavoidable.

The Highways Agency said gritting of motorways and major roads would continue throughout the week as snow showers were also predicted in north-west England, East Anglia and the south-west England.
