Brother blamed for 'honour death'

Tulay Goren

A man accused of murdering his 15-year-old daughter in a so-called "honour killing" has suggested his brother was responsible for the crime.

Mehmet Goren's daughter Tulay has not been seen since going missing in 1999.

Mr Goren, 49, of north London, told the Old Bailey: "If anyone within the Goren family brought harm to Tulay, that must be Ali Goren."

Ali Goren's lawyer accused Mehmet of "making this up as you go along". Both men and their brother Cuma deny murder.

Speaking through a Turkish interpreter, Mehmet Goren told the court that on 7 January 1999 - the day prosecutors say Tulay was killed - Ali took her to stay above his kebab shop in Workington, Cumbria.

Mehmet Goren continued: "It is not possible for me to harm my own child.

Kurdish separatist claim

"I told you where Tulay went on January 7. Those who know about this, I invite them to come here and admit it."

Earlier in the day Mehmet Goren said his brother Ali had told him to claim Tulay had been handed to Kurdish separatist group the PKK.

Mehmet Goren told the court: "He [Ali] said to me, 'the best thing for you to say is that you handed the girl over to the PKK'.

"I said to him, 'if that's what you are saying in that case there is more that you know you are not saying'."

But Michael Bromley-Martin QC, representing Ali Goren, 56, of Walthamstow, east London, said: "You are making this up as you go along, aren't you?"

Tulay went missing from Woodford Green, north London, in 1999.

Prosecutors say she was murdered because of her relationship with boyfriend Halil Unal.

The jury has been told that her family did not approve of him because he was from a different branch of Islam.

A third brother, Cuma Goren, 42, of Walthamstow, is accused of murdering Tulay.

All three brothers also deny conspiracy to murder Mr Unal.
