New Castle, DE – New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announced special plans to honor those in New Castle County who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, New Castle County has lost 1,368 people related to the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 11, the county will host a memorial ceremony for family and community members who’ve lost loved ones to COVID-19 with a memorial flag garden and photo displays. The event will feature local dignitaries and faith leaders and the dedication of a new memorial bench in the park. In addition to speeches, there will be singing, supportive fellowship, as well as information on local support resources.
“We are honored to host this event to remember those loved ones who lost their lives to this pandemic,” said County Executive Meyer. “We hope the community supports this program by providing images of their loves ones in memory of those they lost.”
The public is invited to attend the ceremony on Wednesday, May 11, 6 p.m. at the Glasgow Park Bank Barn, 2275 Pulaski Highway in Bear, Delaware. Following the ceremony, the photo display will be open for viewing and will remain open during the Farmers Market on Thursdays through October from 3-7 p.m.
The community can commemorate their loved one at the remembrance event in two ways. First, they can share a photo of their loved one to be included in the photo display. Second, families can create a memorial flag to be displayed in the memorial flag garden on May 11.
