Now is the time for New Castle County residents to check out the latest edition of “HAPPENINGS,” the free quarterly guide to activities and events at county parks, recreation centers, libraries and other sites.
“We have a ton of great events and activities set to go this summer, perfect for free and cheap ‘staycation’ fun,” County Executive Thomas P. Gordon said.
HAPPENINGS is posted on the county website at www.nccde.org/255/The-Happenings-Guide.
Printed copies also are available at the New Castle County Government Center at 87 Read’s Way and Gilliam Building at 77 Read’s Way, both near New Castle, as well as all county libraries and the Absalom Jones Senior Center at 310 Kiamensi Road, Garfield Park Community Recreation Center at 26 Karlyn Drive near New Castle and Hockessin Community Recreation Center at 7259 Lancaster Pike.
In addition to a wide variety of summer camps and classes from fitness to fine arts, HAPPENINGS gives all the details about activities including the county’s wildly popular Dancin’ in the Park and Food Truck Festival that is returning to Glasgow Park and the Ice Cream Festival and Delaware Shakespeare Festival that are well-known at Rockwood Park.
HAPPENINGS also gives all the information residents need to join the libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge, the super-creative IMAZINE youth magazine and many other youth programs, lots of sports and swimming at Surratte Pool, along with the county’s popular farmers’ markets.
Readers will find details about the family-friendly Take Me Fishing event before Father’s Day at Glasgow Park, also home of Pets in the Park, and the popular Platinum Picnic for senior citizens as well as the giant Family Fun Day at Carousel Park, also the home of the county police horses and a wide variety of programs including horseback riding lessons and petting zoo. The guide also provides information about housing programs, important county phone numbers and other useful information.
“With all the many programs and services offered to the community, you are guaranteed to be kept busy this summer in New Castle County,” said Sophia Hanson, general manager of the Department of Community Services. “You won’t be bored.”
And the activities highlighted in HAPPENINGS are easy on the family budget.
“County Council and the county subsidize many events,” Gordon said, “but we thank many sponsors and donors – from businesses to families and individuals – who help keep them free or low-cost for you.”
