  6. Request Academic Credit: You can choose to receive 1-3 independent research credits per semester for your USP project in addition to your stipend and/or other expenses. To receive credits through an academic department (e.g. your major department, your mentor's department), please work with your mentor and departmental administrative staff to file the appropriate paperwork. To receive credits through the Undergraduate Scholars Program, please select the requested number of USP 489/490 credits below and USP will contact you to fill out necessary paperwork at the conclusion of the review process. Please note - USP will only register students for USP credits during the term in which they have been approved for funding. Requests for retro-active or future-dated terms cannot be accommodated.   9. Institutional Review: Some types of research and creative projects involve sensitive activities that may require permits and/or approval from the Institutional Review Board or other committee. Please answer the following questions. You will be responsible for working with your faculty mentor to acquire appropriate approvals. See IRB Process on the USP website for more information.

  10. Responsible Conduct of Research: You are responsible for conducting your research in an ethical manner according to the standards of your discipline. Federal law requires all researchers receiving federal funds to be trained in the responsible conduct of research (RCR). Students may meet this requirement by enrolling and successfully completing a research ethics course online through the CITI program. Alternatively, in semesters when it is offered, students may enroll in the "research ethics" special topics seminar offered through the MSU Department of History and Philosophy.
