On a Federation starship or facility the chief of security (or security chief) is the officer in charge of the safety and well being of the ship's crew, passengers, and cargo.

The position is often, but not always, combined with the position of ship's tactical officer. The chief was usually aided by an assistant chief of security.

An acting security chief is an officer assigned the position on a temporary basis, as a provisional officer. Lieutenant Junior Grade Worf was made the Enterprise-D's acting chief of security after the death of Lieutenant Natasha Yar. (TNG episode: "Skin of Evil"; TNG novel: Diplomatic Implausibility)
