An uhlan was a title, historically given to a member of a military organization who served as part of a cavalry unit. The name originated in the pre-industrial milieu of Eastern Europe on Earth.

This title was used as a rank for lowly members of the military of the Romulan Star Empire. (TNG episode: "Unification"; TTN novel: Taking Wing)

History and specifications[]

In the mid-23rd century, Romulan uhlans wore checkered, silver shirts. On female uhlans, a blue scarf was draped over the right shoulder, reaching down to the skirt, fastened with a black belt. Both males and females wore black boots and golden helmets that left the face visible, but male Romulan uhlans wore the checkered blue trousers instead of the scarf, and their shirt included a black turtleneck. (STO - Yesterday's War mission: "The Core of the Matter")

In the year 2270, uhlans were among the Romulan forces attacking the mining camps of the Gorn and Federation on Edren IV. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Miner Instabilities")

Around the same time, uhlans guarded the meeting between Krog of the Na'kuhl and Commander Chulak on Galorndon Core. They were disabled by an away team from the 25th century. (STO - Yesterday's War mission: "The Core of the Matter")

In 2368, Proconsul Neral reminisced how he started in the military as an uhlan before moving to his political career. (TNG episode: "Unification")

By the 2400s decade, uhlans were found in different Romulan factions: On New Romulus, civilian survivors were recruited to serve as uhlans in the colony, and the Tal Shiar forces undermining them included uniformed uhlans. (STO - New Romulus missions: "Staging Area", "Vastam Peaks")

While Reman forces included their own sets of ranks, the Reman Resistance also included uhlans. Obisek deployed these during the Battle of Brea III against the Tal Shiar forces of Colonel Hakeev. (STO - Romulan Mystery mission: "Cutting the Cord")

The Romulan Republic Navy, previously the RRF, followed Romulan rank structure but had newly designed uniforms. Uhlans served aboards RRF ships and in the New Romulus Command center. (STO - New Romulus mission: "New Romulus Aid", inside the Command Center)
