The USS Stargazer (NCC-2893-A) was a 24th century Federation starship, a tier 3-rated Stargazer-class heavy cruiser, and prototype of its class, in Starfleet service from the 2380s decade. Unlike many starships being built by the Federation at this time, the Stargazer-A and its sister ships were geared toward "scientific research and exploration" and considered to be among the "Ships of the Line." Service history and disposition[]
The new Stargazer-A took its name from the Constellation-class heavy cruiser[5] USS Stargazer (NCC-2893) that gained notoriety under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the 2330s. (TNG episode: "The Battle")

In the 2370s, the Intrepid-class science vessel USS Stargazer was the first vessel to carry the NCC registry number NCC-2893-A in honor of Picard's first command. (TNG - Unlimited - Telepathy War comic: "Heart of Darkness")
Construction of the new Stargazer-A began at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on stardate 58839.03 in the year 2381; the ship had entered active service by 2387. (STO websites: Ships of the Line, The Path to 2409)

In that year, the Stargazer-A was sent to the Devos system in order to keep an eye on a group of Alpha Jem'Hadar that had taken control of a former Dominion ketracel-white storage facility on Devos II. The Stargazer was to take no further actions unless the Jem'Hadar made aggressive moves. This mission was part of Starfleet's arrangement to help the Cardassian Union deal with "issues outside of their borders." (STO website: The Path to 2409)
While ship conducted a stellar survey near 2466 M in 2393, the Stargazer was contacted by the Metron Consortium. (STO novel: The Needs of the Many)
In 2406, the Stargazer made first contact with the Xaraxian Congress. This marked the beginning of friendly relations between the Federation and the Xaraxians. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Scientific Mandate")
From 2410 onward, the Stargazer-A represented its class on the Starfleet Shipyards Operations interface at Khitomer Alliance shipyard facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
