The Springfield-class was a Federation starship type, a frigate/light frigate in Starfleet service in the latter half of the 24th century. By the turn of the 2370s decade, the Springfield was nearing the end of its production lifetime, the final vessels of this type were due to be decommissioned by 2375. The class was named after various cities named Springfield on Earth. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds"; ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia; Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom)
History and specifications[]
The Springfield class was launched in 2352,[2] and part of the design lineage that included the larger Galaxy-class. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 110: "Springfield class")
Physically, a ship of the class was comprised of a saucer section, with a v-shaped structure at the back of the hull. This cut provided room for mission-specific modules that could house additional sensors, cargo or weapons. A pair of downward-turned pylons suspended the secondary hull beneath the saucer. A pair of warp nacelles were attached with the secondary hull through wing-like nacelle pylons. The warp nacelles were the same as those used on the Cheyenne-class cruiser. While the navigational deflector was positioned at the bow of the secondary hull, the shuttlebay was tucked into the rear of the mission module. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 110: "Springfield class")
The Springfield's missions included survey, patrol and ferrying. Its crew topped at 430. For defensive and offensive purposes, eight phaser beam arrays and two photon torpedo launchers were emplaced around the hull. While its top speed was warp factor 9.2, a ship of the class could sustain a maximum cruising speed of warp 7.5. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 110: "Springfield class")
Ships of the class participated in the cross-temporal conflicts of the Trexelian Expanse around stardate 76XX.3 in the 2270s, 2360s and 2370s decades. (ST video game: Trexels mission: "Skirmish")
In 2367, the USS Chekov participated in the Battle of Wolf 359, were the Borg Collective delivered a sound defeat to the Federation. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")
Around the time of the Dominion War in 2375, the remaining Springfield-class ships were slated to be decomissioned, replaced by more combat-capable starship types. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom, The Official Starships Collection Issue 110: "Springfield class")
