Motherlode was the unofficial name of Arcadia III, the third planet of the Arcadian system in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant. (TAS - Log Three novelizations: Once Upon a Planet, Mudd's Passion)
Specifics[]
Motherlode did not have any moons, but it did have a ring system consisting of one thin Saturn-like ring and a small belt of asteroids forming a darker, less distinct second ring further out in the planet's orbit. The planet had great potential mining wealth, enough even to attract non-humanoids from lighter gravity worlds who struggled against Motherlode's gravity, which was slightly above 1G. Minerals may have included quartzine. (TAS - Log Three novelization: Mudd's Passion)
Motherlode might not be a class M planet. Arcadia, the fifth planet, was listed as the system's only such world. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
It did have a breathable atmosphere with a yellowish-blue sky. (TAS episode: "Mudd's Passion")
Mining colony[]
A nonaligned mining colony was located on Motherlode. The semi-permanent city was built along the base of a mountain range and was inhabited by a multiracial group that included humanoids, Ursinoids, a monopedal species, and avianoids. Local law permitted the death penalty for swindlers, and miners followed the law of caveat emptor. (TAS - Log Three novelization: Mudd's Passion)
The colony did not recognize Federation law. A prominent central structure was used for public gatherings. Miners used groundcars for transportation. (TAS episode: "Mudd's Passion")
History[]
In 2269, the starship USS Enterprise arrived in a parking orbit of Motherlode to search for trader Harry Mudd. James T. Kirk and Spock found him trying to sell love potion crystals, aided by a Rigelian hypnoid who took the form of his smitten aide, Lora. One of the miners had accepted Mudd's price of 300 credits when Kirk and Spock intervened and exposed the hypnoid's deception. Mudd surrendered to the Starfleet officers before angry miners could stone him to death. (TAS episode & Log Three novelization: Mudd's Passion)
