- Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, was assassinated. Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln suspected that Khan Noonien Singh may have been responsible.[2]
- 24 November
- Atlantis begins STS-44, a United States Defense Department mission. Personnel included Commander Fred Gregory, pilot Tom Hendrix, payload specialist Tom Hennen, and mission specialists Mario Runco, Story Musgrave and Jim Voss.[4]
- 1 December
- Atlantis complets the STS-44 mission.[4]
- 26 December
- The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolves into a number of independent republics and federations. With this, the KGB ceases to exist.[5]
