A planet or world was a primary prototypical planetary body that typically orbited a star; where rogue planets did not. Planets varied greatly in size, composition, surface environment, and atmospheric compounds. The Federation had numerous different classifications for planets depending on these variables. A government that controlled an entire planet was a world government.
Planets could be changed to a class M environment by terraforming. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; TNG: "Home Soil")
By 2399, septillion planets were known to Federation science. (PIC: "Absolute Candor")
In 2401, planet was listed as one of the results in Raffaela Musiker's search for the "red lady". (PIC: "The Next Generation")
In 2259, in the alternate reality, when targeted comm bursts were broadcast to distant planets from Starfleet starships, planetary information was displayed on the main viewscreen, such as the class and status as a living planet (a planet with life), its moons, the native intelligent species, the star system, sector and sector block locations. Geographical information was also displayed. (Star Trek Into Darkness display graphic)
